People joke about his powder puff shots but a collection of his greatest goals would put to shame our current midfields entire goals put together.

Martinez went downhill when he decided to replace playmakers like Osman and Pienaar with Kone and Cleverley.

Spot on. Once the quick minded players were replaced that was the end of it. We've never replaced or improved on the likes of Osman, Pienaar, Arteta etc. These players have been replaced with the likes of McCarthy, basicslly players who break up play but can't pass a ball 5 yards

He was the best midfielder in the league in the two seasons before he joined Arsenal for my money, how i would love another Arteta.

Before his cruciate ligament injury in 09 (classic Everton to get 4 ACL injuries in one season just as we had a good side) he was absolutely magical. He came back from that injury not even half as good yet still had the quality to walk into Arsenal’s midfield and become captain. People underrated how good he was in my opinion.

Very much so mate, good post.

Good point that mate. When he came back you could see he was never gonna be the same but like you say, he went to Arsenal and was one of their best midfielders

I honestly thought 10m was a decent fee at the time as I felt he wasn't the same player.

Looking back it was about 20m short lol

He was honestly worth close to that figure mate, he went on to have a five year career and became captain at Arsenal and i think he was there regular penalty taker as well. If they appoint him as there new manager it was the one of the best 10 millions they ever spent.

When you look at the likes of Mahrez and a City bid of 80 mill, Mikel would be worth mega money is this day and age.

We sold him for an absolute song, but to be fair to him he owed us little.

It's mad isn't it becsuse we hold onto players for far too long yet he had another bloody 5 years worth of togger in him and we let him go at a snip.

He was a class above everyone before that injury. Do you remember that bit of skill away at Villa on the touchline. Game was 0-0 I think but the price of skill on the touch line was superb.

I was heartbroken, but his talent deserved CL football, the deal was poor though for us and Bill was as nostalgic and loyal as ever.

I do mate, another one that stands out to me was a good Friday game when he utterly had the game and its tempo in his pocket, two opposing players on him every time and him standing over it and still hitting the mark every time i think he scored and got two assists, it might have been at home to a Pulis Stoke who were no slouches defensively in those days.

About Klassen again - there is a player in there somewhere. Walsh should be made to take him with him manacled to his ankle and forced to contribute to Klassen's obscene wages which he is paid for doing precisely f all for EFC.

Brands will know Klaasen very well from his time in the Dutch league . I think we will see a call made on his future very quickly.

Unfortunately I think Davy will be shown the door - I think Brands will have taken keen interest in what he was doing here regardless of being at PSV, and listening to Koemans comments - if they have chatted about him I wouldn't be surprised if he is shown the door.

Shame, better players then him have come in and struggled and went on to be a success...
