David Unsworth

That win was the first in a series of good results for us coming after a series of poor results and poor performances under David Unsworth.

One win at home to West Ham won't change that and several poor performances where he left Rooney Rooney out of the team made me believe he was not the man to manage the first team... which was unfortunate because I really hoped he was. He gets the the club, he knows what it means and if he gets the opportunity to learn his trade at a smaller club then he should take.

You have your opinions , I have mine.
I believe the West Ham game had as much to do with the man in the stand as it had with the man on the line.
Should have kept him sat in the stands then because he’s been next to useless stood on the touch line.

You’ve made excuses for all of Unsworth’s failing there. I was there, I sat through Unsworth’s football and he was taking us down.

We all sat through it, and it was still better than the excuse for football we're being served up now, despite them having a tfr window to correct things.

...Allardyce has brought his own people in and managing the U23s is bound to be a bit of a come down after being in charge of the first team. The timing is probably right for him to move on. It’ll be a big challenge for him.

U23s were dreadful when Unsy was in charge of the first team (well it was Franny Jeffers left in charge). Unsy's got them firing again now.

I've said before it was inevitable he'd go in the summer if the right opportunity came along and good luck to him. Hopefully he will leave the U23s in the hands of John Ebrell but I have a feeling he may go with Unsy.

Good luck to him anyway, He's got the makings of a good club manager.

Hi mate, I`m not claiming to be an ITK or anything.

My best mate works as part of the security team at our training ground ( Finch Farm ).

From what he tells me, is that Unsworth is universally liked by all there, as he is such a grounded and down to earth fella.

He treats everyone from the cleaners to the players the same and has no ego at all.

If true, I think you`re getting a future top coach and a very nice fella.
Get your mate on the phone NOW
keep him on the phone till midnight weds
All I repeat all coming and going to be reported back here immediately

If Unsworth is the man for us he'll show it at Oxford (if he goes there).

And this is why our fans deserve no success- I would be mortified if we appointed a manager on the back of a bit of success with a league one/two club.

Thats what Sunderland did with the likes of Di Canio and Poyet ffs.

We need proven managers preferably who have European pedigree and have won a few relevant trophies.

He just didn't have the backing of the board. The players knew it and didn't do all they could. What he also didn't have was the experience of managing big losses in front of the camera glare. An experienced boss just takes that on and deflects it.

A lot of the Unsworth 'failings' were perception and should easily have been neutralised.

As said, proof of the pudding is that he shifted us more places up the league than Allardyce has and he acquired more points per game.

Perception trumps reality though. :coffee:
Though Trump has no perception of reality..... Anyway I hope David does well if he goes to Oxford and maybe we will see him again at our club

I'll be really sad if Unsy leaves because of the good work he's done with the U23s, but it could be good experience for him as a manager. (And I met someone else who worked at Finch Farm and she said the same, she thought Unsworth was lovely. Big Dunc too.)

Love Unsworth. He'll probably kick himself for the rest of his career as our managers job was there for the taking, he basically had a clear run at it given that we ended up panicking and going for Allardyce.

Can't help but think he missed a massive opportunity that might not come around again.

All the very best to him though if he does get the job
I really don't think he particularly messed up with it apart from one thing which i'll mention later. I think the team was on its knees and we were playing two games a week with no time to really work on coaching them on the pitch. I think a lot of people's expectations about what he could achieve in that time were completely over the top. We had no clear team or pattern of play and we were conceding goals and not scoring any. Morale was rock bottom. He needed to be given some time to sort it out and in my opinion we should have appointed him from the word go until the end of the season. What he managed to achieve was to get us scoring goals again and we won both of our home games. The final one he got the balance right in midfield and defence, binned off Schniederlin, and we played the best football we have played all season. He just needed to be given more time. The only real mistake he made in my opinion was not being a bit tougher with his demands, in my opinion he should have forced the issue with Moshiri and said he was only taking the job on if they confirmed him until the end of the season. That would have given him more authority with the players and more time. I still maintain that we panicked and sacked him too soon and we are paying for it with Allardyce and i think we may well pay for it after Allardyce has gone.
