Totally agree Mikey, and a natural formation for footballers who have played in Britain for most of their careers (like our lot) as they've played it since youth level.

It's amazing the snobbery towards it. Yes, football has moved on, but Arsenal with Henry / Bergkamp played a variation of it, and so did Man Utd with Giggs / Beckham / Yorke / Cole.

When in doubt, default to something that simple. If Rooney won't stay up front, drop him and use the infinitely less talented Calvert-Lewin and Niasse. Even Calvert-Lewin and Sandro. Or Mirallas.

Aww, Gylfi can't play out wide? Ok, two wingers in Lennon and Lookman. Dull, not inspiring, but it means Baines doesn't have to labour forward, and Kenny can actually get some cover.

Gueye and god knows who in the middle and try and get a result, get confidence, then be more expansive. We aren't Bayern or Real Madrid, we don't have the players or the point safety net to be in some sort of 4-3-3 wonder formation.

Orly, we are playing False back 4, False Diamond and False Strikers....

Its all horribly false... We had a slide show about how the False 9 will win the passing... and decided to take it to the next level.

I've been saying it for ages now, we should go for a flat 4-4-2

Who can't play in one of those? It's the most natural formation there is

When I see the team sheet posted on Twitter, with players in stated positions, I think to myself, other than the back 5 and possibly Niasse, none of those players are actually going to stay in those positions. It feels like we haven't even actually had a plan / proper formation for a long time, possibly ever since the match where we beat Arsenal 3-0 at home with Naismith as a false 9 (lol).

I agree that 4-4-2 with players who have the discipline to stick to their positions might help that.

There in lies the issue mate, yesterday Davies was rm, centre mid, back to rm then rwb. Mirallas was rw then striker, then lw, then back to playing behind the striker. Rooney was centre forward, rw then am then cm. Klassen was lm then cm then lw then cm.

Play with 2 wingers who in turn will help the full backs. Play with 2 midfielders in the centre. Play with 2 strikers or a striker with a player just behind.

It's not rocket science but Martinez, Koeman and Unsworth seem hell bent on constantly playing some kind of 4-3-3.

We have players who we can play in their correct positions, the managers have chosen to simply ignore what's at their disposal or are just admitting they are tactically negligent and incapable of seeing what we can all see.

After last night I feel sorry for him as a blue , but why the he did he play CU CU at left back this has been tried and been a disaster now on 3 occasions - Moshiri using Talksport as a media for our club via Jim White is a total embarrassment too - evidently our new manager is soon to be appointed according to mouthpiece Jim White via Moshiri - we are becoming a joke of the field too!
Unsworth will be resigning too soon the way we are going!

Forget the he’s a blue crap....that’s one of the reasons we’re in this mess.
Too many ex evertonians at the club who lost all their footballing career.
Ship them out and get some winners in from somewhere

You're spot on about the players moving everywhere, I've noticed that too, there's no discernible formation. To go back to basics it doesn't even necessarily need to be a 4-4-2 (though that would be simplest to implement). It just needs to be a sensible, simple, obviously defined and easy to understand system where the players:

A. Have the ability to play in a explicitly defined functional position
B. Understand what that position requires of them
C. Also have the discipline to stick to that position, both with the ball and without

Since that Arsenal game that I mentioned I feel no manager has managed this, despite it's simplicity and obviousness.

You always hear footballers that are playing for teams that win even when they aren't playing well talking about "each of us knows what our role is within the team". I don't feel any of the current team could say this.

There's talent in the squad for me (perhaps CB being an exception), but we desperately need someone to come in and define the system, the roles for the players we've got within that system, and get the right players to know and stick to their positions.
