2025/26 David Moyes

" I think on average if you sign four I think one probably successful, I think that's somewhat the ratio in where it is. "

What's this crap he's spouting now ? Absolute nonsense, considering the thousands of people the club is employing to get the transfers right this is an absurdly low bar.
Imagine having the gall to try and expectation manage on transfers now as well to the point where you are basically saying you should be allowed to waste 75m pounds for every 100m spent. Absolutely ludicrous and yet the Moyesettes will lap it up.

Daveys comments from the LiverpoolRS Echo on Merlin, Tyler et al. 🤔

“Merlin, we like, Tyler, we like. Tyler, we're giving more time to because of his age. Merlin could have easily been involved in some more games and played a little bit more time. It'll do him no harm to have sat back for the best part of the season and looked at it. No, we like them, they're both good boys.”

“The team has been doing pretty well, so they've [the wider squad] not been required that often. It's always the ones who are not in who are the ones who you think can do a better job, so it's one of those things.”

“It's always the way, isn't it? You're always hoping that the opportunities come, and when they do, they're ready to take it. I hope they are ready, because we need it... I thought Tyrique came off the bench at Brentford and made a difference, [he] maybe didn't in the game on Sunday. So this is the thing, you never know what you're going to get. There's no guarantee, and we can name whoever we like. But we want them to come on when they do come on and make a difference.”

“I could think of other clubs not too far away, I could think of the levels of what would be expected, how many players are supposed to have been used.

"I think on average if you sign four I think one probably successful, I think that's somewhat the ratio in where it is. I think actually the players who've been here have done a good job, people like Kiernan and Jack have added to it as well. I think we've needed moments at different times from Merlin, and Tyler, a little bit less. Probably in the main we’ve been OK.”

Anyone believing he's the way forward for this club need to read that.

1 in 4 a success....maybe last time around when he was spending £1M or £2M fees for a few players in a window while also breaking the club record fee for a decent player on a regular basis (or getting the odd gem in for £5M) but at these prices today that's a recipe for disaster.

You cant spend £100M at this club and only get value from £25M spent. That has to lose you your job. Full stop.

Benrahma would have been a good option at Everton for several years. Soucek a fantastic signing. Coufal a much better right back than we've had in 3 decades. Paqueta was also very good for them.

Those 6 players would massively have improved Everton imo.

Obviously he also had a lot of flops at West Ham too. Some expensive ones too.

They paid £30m for Benrahma, and he left on loan/with a later fee but they lost a few bob.

They paid £40m+ for Paqueta, and he had the problems he did, and they made a loss.

Dont think Soucek was top 20 or I'd have included him.

A West Ham fan come on here moaning and said he spent £500m+, I didn't believe it and went to check and recall from the top 20, thinking all considered (fee paid, what they delivered, what they sold), there's 2 I'd have wanted Everton to replicate. That's not to say a few more wouldn't have improved us, it's just not to the extent of their fee/what they did at West Ham.

They signed so much rubbish, laughed a lot when they actually paid big money for Vlasic. Cornet as well, Ward-Prowse was big money too. Scamacca. Jeez.

Yeah I'm 50/50 on getting rid or not. But I agree, without being inside on the actual conversations, the external evidence appears to point to a half way house of two opposite approaches.

I have zero evidence for this but I can imagine Angus being quite easy for a wiley old codger like Moyes to exert his will over him.

He sounds 💩-scared of Moyes when he talks about him.

This is the concern. He went to a club with a new stadium and realistic expectations of getting in or around the top 6 due to the ridiculous stadium deal done by Boris Johnson and pissed away £500 million, leaving the club in a perilous financial position. He's now arrived at a club with a new stadium and realistic expectations of getting in or around the top 6 due to the size of it's fan base and has already admitted he's wasted £75 million in 1 window.

Aligns with the £500m he spent at West Ham.

Take his top 20 players signed there, I'd have had 2. Bowen and Kudus, the latter we nearly had on loan the window before.
Can see why Scamacca was signed, just didn't work out.
We'd had Zouma.
We'd also had Vlasic.
Ironically, Lingard was only a loan but he paid off.

I didn't realise, he only signed one player outright in his first spell at west ham, Jordan Hugill for £9.5M from Preston. A 1 in 4 striker from down the league. Bit fishy.

His time at west ham is skewed, not least 'cos he got 12 months, they moved him on, got Pellegrini in for 18 months, whopped £155M up the wall then got Moyes back in to turn it around. ***

In recent seasons sides have been stockpiling players here and at feeder clubs abroad, chelsea and to a lesser extent city and spurs to. Bloated unmanageable squads, demotivated, overpaid, sat on huge contracts. Could I be bothered sweating blood for west ham or similar elsewhere when I can have a 6 year fully paid holiday down the old kent road?

***So Pellegrini splaffed more cash up the wall in his 18 months than any comparable Moyes 18 month west ham spell.

Context innit.

Soucek back then absolutely it's a little disconcerting that he retains the same level of enthusiasm regarding signing him despite the player's age and decline of attributes, it's like he doesn't fully comprehend the concept of aging

That Echo interview is a public relations disaster for Moyes.

He's basically underlined that

  • he cant do his job
  • he's going to bankrupt the club with his transfer decisions
I'm guessing he's gone rogue with that, because I cant imagine the comms people at Everton have been consulted and ok'd that disastrous series of admissions.

"We're going to move to a broader, flatter structure, where we have experts in data and analytics, in football operations, in recruitment and talent ID, and then in player trading.

"Some of those people have already come onboard and there are going to be some more announcements over the next couple of weeks. I've been delighted by the quality of individuals that we've been able to attract.

"I think when Everton fans see it, they're going to be really reassured that we've got, I think, a world-class football operations team in place who'll be there to support David, who we think is a world-class manager."

Image how bad it could be without a world class team on transfers.

Of course context.

Of which, those two examples - West Ham paid £35m+ for Zouma. We had him on loan. £30m+ for Vlasic AFTER we paid £8m and he failed. They also had to make Benrahma perm to get Lingard on loan.

He finished at West Ham with them finishing the season 4 points above Dyche's chaotic Everton with, I believe, the oldest average squad in the league. After spending £500m+

He did give them some good times though, they'll be eternally grateful for the conference cup win but in my view, his recruitment at West Ham was bad and not what I'd like replicated at Everton.

Poor old Adam Aznou can’t even make a bomb squad article.

Players get old, Noble retired. Rice was pinched. west ham are a weird case (not least their much hated owners) but the tax payer funded stadium their support utterly hates.
Gives off the vibe of existing on a shoe string, take the gate, take the tv and sponsorship and just about float along.

I've said before Moyes is best with his back to the wall, he isn't great when he has a few quid, it's wheeler-dealering and quality for low cost where he excels.
Squad or starting eleven average ages are often skewed by a veteran GK or two. Who saw us having so many mid 30's still going?

Re here, last summer spelled out the current malaise in making signings, Tete was done then Fulham moved the heavens to keep him (because they were struggling for replacements all over their squad). We got knocked back by a lot of players, fofana and the spanish lad. Players and or agents are much more cagey, everyone wants the 6 year beano at chelsea. Ironically our clear and obvious PotS is one who jumped ship out of stamford bridge gravy train. Well seized the Moyes.
