The rain, it raineth every day
We need leadership from the top.Yeah tbf that's definitely an understatement. I'm not trying to play down the absolute basket case of a club we were for a good 5 years or so, but tbh in the end we managed to emerge miraculously unscathed.
No relegation, new rich owners and new stadium, debts mostly cleared and some financial headroom after years of austerity, most of that awful squad clearing out on the expiry of their contracts. The opportunity was there to have a clean break from those mad years and start a completely fresh project.
The biggest hangover remaining in my mind is the psychological trauma of fans who were put through so much that now they're happy to just exist in the PL without being in immediate danger.
One of the worst things you can do in football is be comfortable treading water while everyone around you is improving. Clubs have bounced back from worse and ended up in a better position that what we're in now. If we're not careful we will fall back into the same cycle of changing managers every 2 years and end up with another frankensteins monster of a squad. We need to get a young project manger, back them and trust them to build a new identity. Under Moyes we will never be able to escape the ghosts of the past.
This from Kinnear in December :
'The second half of the season will undoubtedly have some bumps along the way as we compete in the most challenging league in world football, but I believe with our ownership, manager, team and supporters fully united we can surmount any challenge.
I know that within the Club, every player and member of staff will wake up each morning striving with each sinew to ensure ‘the School of Science is on its way back’.
A lot of words, more action would be nice.
