But that’s the point, Branthwaite will be classed as £1.7m player in that table. So why would a £100m be ignored?

If we must count Grealish as a £100m player then we must count Branthwaite as a £1m player because that was the last permanent transfer fee paid for him. If people want to use these rules then I’ll play along, just hope to see some consistency from those with unhealthy agendas that’s all.
Sorry I'm late to this so I might be missing some context, but is that not the exact point being made? That the table isn't necessarily indicative of anything because it either reflects transfer fees and so undervalues a number of players, or it reflects transfer value but doesn't include some players, including the one with arguably the biggest value of the lot?

Look at the current squad values based on Transfermarkt. We’re 14th in that table too. Maybe there’s a different metric which suggests Moyes is currently underperforming or performing per expectations.

As I said, I haven't seen the whole conversation so was only commenting on the most recent couple of posts, I'm not aware of the full context of the discussion and wasn't posting to make any particular point of my own, more to try to clarify what was being argued.

Transfermarkt valuations are completely irrelevant though, they're just random numbers really, and don't tell you anything at all. Unless anybody thinks we'd really accept £1m for Harrison Armstrong.

For this reason, I'd only allow any merit to actual cost invested into a playing squad.

Even then - there's a lot of estimations there and significantly, they don't consider wages, so while we look close to Villa, I'm sure not so long ago they had something daft like 97% wages to turnover ratio.

@Efcjake found the below table from 2025 - next to nothing now seperates us from Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth. We probably spend a lot more on wages. Lash £18m Rohl's obligation in there and we're at 414 - midtable. And that's where we are - one single result seperates 8th from 12th. It is what it is.

this from 2024, at the time, in the Prem only Ipswich had a cheaper assembled squad;

Would be intrigued to see 2023 if there's one.

That’s fine. You have to write Barry, Beto, Rohl and Dibling down to zero in that case and you have to inflate the value of other teams talent on the basis. You need to compare apples with apples. You’ll no doubt compare every fruit possible until you find a suitable one to throw at Moyes to justify your prejudices.
You might get a packet of broken biscuits for them two - or in Rohl's case read there may be a clause in his contract that we only have to sign him if he appears in a number of games or us this season - hence played great at Villa & not kicked a ball since ?????

Is squad worth or squad spend?
I’m not really sure what value the table has for whatever argument is being put forward tbh.

But if it’s to suit the poor old Moyes narrative then let’s just ignore the £100m player we have / had in the squad.
And the defender that most on here claim to be worth £80m if we were to sell him.
Or the attacking midfielder who cost £14m but people would be horrified about if we let him go for less than £50m
It's squad value determined by purchase prices.

Again, it's meant to take the subjectivity of what we imagine a player is worth and evaluates what has been invested into each squad.

But I understand you just don't like that it shows Moyes is overachieving.

This A1 can we sign or programme Barry to not miss sitters?
