2025/26 David Moyes

. Not by buying older, more expensive players which is a big fear of mine with Moyes.
That’s the same mistake West Ham made though. Moyes told them to get McTominay and Maguire and instead they squandered fortunes on “project players.”

Funnily enough our best players this season are older players like Pickford, Grealish and KDH, who many advocated dropping for Alcaraz.

The likelihood is the club will go backwards. People seem to forget that, for whatever you think of him, Moyes is a very competent football manager.

The new owners don’t even have the resources of early Mosh to pour in. This is actually a good thing as we might build in a more cautious manner.

What is the evidence for “The likelihood is the club will go backwards.”

There has to be a balance, of course, but buying the Maguires and McTominays of this world essentially bankrupt a club eventually. High fees, high wages and no resale. It's the footballing equivalent of renting a penthouse versus buying a nice semi (ooh err before someone else says it). It's literally where we were when Moshiri (Usmanov) turned off the money tap.

Buying McTominay would probably have had West Ham back at the top end of the table. Add Maguire and they would have been European contenders.

Plums seem to think top quality internationals grow on trees and can be developed and then sold in for massive quantities of cash.

You only replace Moyes with a guaranteed upgrade, and there are few available that Everton could get throughout a season.

Need to wait it out Villa style and get an Emery type figure - a consistent achiever who didn't take to a top job quickly enough so had to move a tier below.

Thought the reason Emery got the Villa job was because his reputation took a knock when he failed at Arsenal?

You have absolutely no idea if this is true. Furthermore, it wasn't really my point. If those two got West Ham champions league football, and that is a huge if despite your assertions, then the expense would have been worth it. Anything less and they would've just been a drain on the club financially. Nobody thinks finding the next generation of internationals is easy but that shouldn't stop clubs from trying. Isn't that what we've tried with Branthwaite, Garner, Dibling and Barry? Some will work out some won't and that's fine, because even if they arrive with big fees they will be on relatively low wages and at least some of the fee will be recoupable due to their age. Hell, we could probably get a fee for McNeil if we made him available this window.

So Moshiri’s poor managerial choices mean TFG will also get it wrong. That’s not logical sound.
Moshiri’s choices weren’t that bad. It’s just a very hard league where you have the toughest teams on the planet. But people underestimate Moyes because he has to come up through the English system. Had he the luxury of starting his career in an easy European league and won loads of easy pots he would get a lot more leeway.
