2024/25 David Moyes

How did he earn it more than Silva and Allardyce?

Allardyce and Silva had much better squads with a lot more money to spend in arguably less competitive league seasons.

Allardyce, for example, got us to 49 points in 17/18 (but 8th in the league), Dyche got us to 48 points in 23/24 (that's with adding back our 8 deducted points, would have been like 12th I think). This shows how less competitive the league was, but also, Allardyce had players like Rooney, Sigurdsson, Baines, a younger Coleman.

That’s not really fair comparing someone who came in half way through a season, to someone who had the full season. How do you know Allardyce wouldn’t have got more than 49 points over a full season? Silva got more than that over his full season too.

What about Dyche’s performance this season when he left us 1 point above the drop zone in January?

Yeah but both of them had a lot more money to spend, mate. Even Allardyce spent like 50 mil with no major sales in his short time here.

I'm basing my assessment of their performance based on all factors, not just where they finished.

And yeah Dyche was rightfully let go this season after being terrible. A bit similar to Silva really, weren't we in the drop zone when he got the bullet? The difference is Dyche came off the back of us being the lowest bet spenders for years and after a long period of turmoil. Silva, again had lots of money spent in both of his summer windows.

I'm not saying that Dyche is a better manager than Silva, Silva was much younger at the time and I think he is the better coach now. I just think Dyche did a better job in his time at the club when you factor in everything, and don't just base it on league position.

I would argue that Moyes does not play defensive football.

His is definitely pragmatic but the goals we have scored since he came in say that it is not all defensive and likes his attacking players to attack. In his first stint there is a lot of evidence that he is not your typical defensive manager. There is also evidence at West Ham in using attacking players to their full advantage.

I trust Moyes to give us a stable footing to at least have the potential to kick on with the right succession. You look at what Martinez inherited, people dubbed him an attacking manager ( I don't agree) but that next season was very good and it was all due to the base that Moyes left.
People that say Moyes is a defensive manager can’t have watched much of his first stint. There were times where it was necessary, but how was it defensive having Baines, Pienaar, Arteta, Yakubu, Fellaini, etc marauding about?

It did take time to get the necessary quality to boss games, but he was building from a low point, much like he’ll be trying to do now.

Fact is, the football you can play comes down to the personnel you have at Blue disposal.

Surely it is the best time to actually embrace whatever the plan is for the squad going forward then?

Why would you want Moyes to fill the squad with players to play defensive football and then hand over to an attacking manager who won’t like the squad?

But I guess that’s the plan isn’t it? So that in 2 years people can turn around and say “we can’t possibly change manager now, the squad would t suit an attacking manager”.

Mediocrity forever!
You seem to think I'm some kind of Moyes follower. Let me tell you i am not so much so i gave up my season ticket near the end of his last spell because of the football he was turning out. I am only stating what i think the new owners will be seeing as someone who has steadied the ship and with the new stadium and a rebuild on the cards they will be aiming for someone who won't jeopardise our premier league status. To bring an unknown quantity into the position we're in at the moment could put that status in jeopardy hence why i think (and kind of understand) why they will keep him for this initial rebuild. This isn't an aim at mediocrity as you state it's an aim of getting solid foundations for the club to go forward and start challenging seriously for trophies. All of course IMHO.

Let's be honest here, what is the ceiling? The way the league is now, just getting into a European spot would be a great achievement. We are competing with financial superpowers.
I think with 3-4 good additions to the team we can have a shot at the lower European places. (Under Moyes)

My problem with Moyes is i think you can give him 8-9 of his players and i still think that's his ceiling. (Lower European places)
Dont think he will ever seriously challenge the CL place on a regular basis regardless of his players.

Lower European places would be excellent progress though. Reevaluate once the team has been rebuilt and is on a solid footing.

I am actually not bothered with him tactically. I think he sets up well and keeps you in games. If I am the owner, I am bringing in someone to oversee the roster construction and I am making sure it is sustainable and talented. If Moyes has any objections to building a team that way, you kick him to the curb. You look for an upgrade but if it isn't there, I don't think we should be in a rush. It would not be wise to hand him a long term deal unless he crushes expectations next year which I don't really see.

They act like it would be difficult to replicate dyche's ingenious tactics of putting 10 men in front of Pickford the entire game

I think this is the target - he has said as much in pressers - target European qualification next season.

If we make it, recruit from there as we’ll need a squad to play on two fronts, and then have a crack at repeating his WHam achievement.

Conversely, if we fall short of that, next summer is when I can see the Friedkins choosing to twist.

Use of the word "roster"....

Is it controversial to say I think it would be a wasted opportunity to not try and get someone better in the summer? I know we aimed for the stars and ballsed it up under Moshiri, but there seems to be a big opportunity to kick on now, and as much as I love Davey, the last couple months haven't been great have they?

I know it's a hell of a lot better than ginger snotball as far as the feeling around the club, and the footy has been a bit better, but is there a glass ceiling? Or would we take 12th next season?

This isn't a Davey Out post or anything, just putting the GOT feelers out there.
