Having experienced Everton's worst start to a season under his management, David Moyes has called for more physical and less pretty football. Fulham, who entertain them tomorrow, have been warned.

Two points from their opening five matches represents Everton's worst beginning to a campaign since 1994, when they were salvaged by Joe Royle under an approach labelled The Dogs of War. Although Royle disliked the term, it is a strategy that would meet with Moyes's approval, if only temporarily.

"We need to rediscover our toughness and maybe we will have to sacrifice a little of the playing style to get better results," he said. "You would always find it hard to out-fight Everton but that happened against Newcastle last Saturday.

"I told the players I have been disappointed by the physical side of their game, especially against Newcastle. I don't think we have competed as well as we can."

I've been saying they need to play with more ANGER for weeks.

If someone's on the half way line running at us on a counter - put the ****er in the stand!!!

If you're in their box and its a scrap just stick a foot or head in to put it in!!!!

And tackles all over the shop. Kick [Poor language removed] out the snides.

Sorry. But I think we've identified that we've been out battled for weeks.

We get bullied out of it. Anfield last year - the snides did it.

Newcastle tried it twice now. Many sides try and do it. Bolton. Blackburn.

Give it em Everton ffs

I admire ya Bulldog spirit Matt, but our Mongrels of Mediocrity don't quite fit the bill of ball busting bastards that we'd like to see getting 'stuck in'. Fellani tries, god knows he does, but sadly his name has already been written into the book pre-kick off by the ref, who then has great pleasure in showing him the minute he jumps for a ball. On the other side of the coin - we have Osman, Arteta, Piennar , Billy and Cahill.. whose combined weight and stature wouldn't worry the softest of midfielders.

But they do need to start trying to bully people, even it does look like when the school bully holds some one at arms length as the hapless child swings aimlessly into thin air, whilst the bully throws his head back and laughs.

The movmement off the ball, running into space, giving people options when attacking and simply putting themselves about all are lacking from our game of late - we're never gonna win the physical battle in the middle of the park, but we can out think and play them ! We've done it before and we can do it again. Even if we did have the added advantage of Donovan last time round :(

I agree with Moyes, we have gone to far the other way - i have been saying it for weeks you need to win the battle for the game before you can impose your quality on other teams.

I agree with Moyes too, but does he have to tell the world? That's now a license for some arsey ref today to get his cards out of his pocket to brandish at Everton players.

Keep it indoors.

I'd settle for a complete display of interest and enthusiasm over the entirety of the match. Too many moments we just haven't matched the commitment of the other club. Being physical is one expression of such interest. But it is also chasing down the football when it is there to be taken and engaging in attacking movement instead of watching or waiting while another player is trying to do the job.

Spot on. And passing sideways for the bulk of the game is a form of non-aggression also. As you say, there's more to this dilemma than simply sticking a foot in.

passing sideways? Jesus that sounds like paradise.

I'd be happy if we could just keep it on the deck and stroke it around a few times

before the inevitable hoof to Duncan Fergallaini.

That's certainly been absent since the second half of the Wolves game. It's just as ineffective as the hoof. Get Arteta further up the pitch and Fellaini back in his holding role and take it from there.

Fellaini back as a defensive midfielder. Osman/Cahill and Arteta in the centre. Pienaar on the left with Baines. Yak up front.

Makes sense to me. I don't think it does our players long term development or confidence to be played out of position so often.
