I liked his music without ever actively looking to delve into it. But I totally get the reaction today, an incredible original talent, a ground breaker, a mover of boundaries and someone prepared to take the risks of exploring and gambling.

Who is there now, with that sort of talent and who will be remembered in decades to come?

Not wanting to derail a RIP thread, and not in the same league musically, (but not bad imo),but in terms of reinvention, trend setting, cross over into films, and longevity, Madonna would be the only one I can think of.

Please, this is not a Bowie/Madonna sing off. Just an observation.

....really sad, they interrupted radio very early this morning with a newsflash. Travelled to and from Blackpool today, brilliant tributes not least Rick Wakeman talking about his genius with Life on Mars. I'm a fan, love the influence on the likes of Mott the Hoople. Gone but very much alive on my I-pod.

Genuinely close to years watching this. Lauren Laverne pretty much summed it up there, saying he was more than just a musician, he became part of this country's national identity.
