Danny Simpson

Ivanovic is playing there because their first choice is injured, so his abilities there aren't really relevant.

Ok, so put Bosingwa in. He's still only got two assists. If an attacking rightback is so vital to success how come only Richards can better Hibbert's return from that position? We can measure it by goals, assists or however you want to do it? Have you noticed that Simpson doesn't feature on the list at all?

only 2!? Sure he's had more?

The only complete list I could find was Statbunker, but it verifies ESPN's data. Maybe he had some more assists in the cups?

Here's the list for the club:

Pienaar 7
Drenthe 6
Fellaini 4
Donovan 3
Cahill 3
Hibbert 3
Osman 2
Baines 2
Gueye 2

You can't simply use one statistic to measure a player's attacking contribution. Your own list says Baines has only contributed 2 assists this season. Does that make Hibbert a bigger offensive threat ?

Anyway, statto time:

According to the Premier League Player Index, which is used by players, scouts, managers and coaches across the world, Simpson’s stats are bettered by just four players in the Premier League this season.Only Patrice Evra, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines have racked up more points for tackles, crosses, interceptions, clearances and ground coverage.

Simpson is actually ranked at 23 in the entire Premier League index table – a list that includes 609 top flight players.
Statistically he is the number one right-back in the Premier League, according to the index.
Simpson is ahead of so-called star-name defenders in the Premier League such as John Terry, Joleon Lescott, ex-team-mate Jose Enrique and even his own captain, Fabricio Coloccini. But he is king of the right-backs in the top flight.

Notably, Simpson has made SEVEN goal-line clearances this season.

Anybody who accuses Simpson of bottling it when it comes to tackling may be interested to know that the right-back has an 83% success rate of coming away with the ball – and he has lost out in just nine tackles.
He has completed 159 defensive duties including completed tackles, clearances, interceptions and blocks – 43 more than Spurs’ Kyle Walker.

He has made more clearances than any other player this season with 39. Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea is his nearest rival on 30.
And in terms of being a hard worker, Simpson has racked up an impressive 173.9 miles – Walker of Spurs is his nearest rival but is eight miles off the pace.

For some strange reason I think Baines hasn't been getting forward as much, but that we've been encouraging the right back to push on. Maybe it's because we've been playing with more of a winger on the left like Pienaar, Drenthe or Gueye, whereas Osman or Coleman supposedly give us more cover on the right?

The Premier League Player Index is bollocks, but I'll let you have it for the sake of argument. Ok, so it measures "tackles, crosses, clearances, interceptions and ground coverage." You said that we urgently needed an attacking right back, but only one of those parameters (crossing) would indicate whether Simpson was any use offensively or not. Infact everything that you've quoted relates to his defensive attributes.

If you judge Everton using the same index Hibbert is our third most effective performer behind Baines and Howard. http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/...2011-2012&paramPosition=&paramItemsPerPage=20

Hibbo ranks only 19 places below Simpson in the entire list of Premier League players. He still has a year left on his contract anyway.

One thing that has surprised me is that Guthrie is out of contract. MOTD were raving about him before Cabaye took his place. I know he played for the dark side, but he's a United product and still only 25. He could possibly be a smart signing for the right of midfield.

He's utterly ADAM. Or Henderson. I'm not too sure which is the worst. GOAT!?!

I'd rather have Jacobsen back.

Feel free to vault me in 12 months when Sunderland sign him and he's the new Alves.

But he won't be. Because he's barely premier league standard.

By that logic we're well stocked up front too, we've got Anichebe and some reserve players.

We're also well stocked in midfield as we have Baxter and Barkley, Cahill and Osman.

See where i'm going ? We need an attacking right back desperately. Hibbert and Neville are not good enough.

have to agree with Brennan here, we may have numbers but no quality at RB

Hibbert is so bad it hurts. Oh, for a decent right back.

Behave his commitment, some of the crosses he hangs over the box are great, alright his goals per game ratio is low! but the lad has played over 300 games for our great Club and therefore in my eyes is no "so bad it hurts" yes he will nevre be an international, and he will never be linked with another Club however when he scores we will riot and dont jump on the "Hibbo Bandwagon" when he does!

to put it simple, if he's not good enough for newcastle's defence, he's nowehere near the calibre we should be looking at, newcastle have a had a good season mainly because of their attacking side and 1 good defender and a good keeper, the other 3 haven't been overly spectacular, perch has done well by the sounds of it but still

I don't think some people understand just how important a role full backs play in the modern game. They have to be able to get up and down, support the wingers have a good delivery and be able to defend on top of that, hibbo sadly can't do the delivery thing a majority of the time neither can fizzer or coleman so yes we need a right back.

Coleman has the speed, hopefully he can improve his crossing.
