Damage to Dixie Dean statue

The Pier Head *event*:

IMO, they (rightly) realized that there will be no huge homecoming to rub everyone's noses in it and that this was as good as it was going to get. They had the animal cunning to work that out, at least.

The ramifications of that riot will be felt for years to come - just as their game against Atletico will.

I have no hesitation in claiming that these people are completely devoid of all adult responsibility. A club who's fans have traded in recent years on a 'collective' ethos have underlined they are the very opposite of that, and the reaction of 'fans union' the Spirit of Shankly affirms it.
The most ironic thing of all is that Bill Shankly would have absolutely flipped had the defacing of Prince Ruperts tower, the Liver building or Dixies statue happened in his day. He would have been calling for prosecutions!

He set them off on their lunacy with all the guff he spoke about scarfs representing people's lives, football being more important than life etc.

That's the truth of it.

Nevertheless, he spoke highly of Dixie Dean and was a socialist at heart, seeing vandalism on this scale would have appalled him.

What evidence do we have for that? He mentioned the word once and it became attached to him as if he was a political animal. I see no other example f how he was. He was just a football mad man who used every angle of propaganda to get the most advantage for his ambitions from it.

Dave I almost disagree with everything you post on this site, but this post is spot on, but I don't think even Shankly thought his comments would be taken as literally as they are by the scum who call themselves Liverpool supporters.

After the damage done to the statue of Merseyside's and the nation's best ever forward by the Kopite Visigoths, a small reminder today of the status he was held in by the civilsed:

When at Thy call my weary feet I turn
The gates of paradise are opened wide
At Goodison I know a man can learn
Rapture more rich than Anfield can provide.
In Coulter’s skill and Geldard’s subtle speed
I see displayed in all its matchless bounty
The power of which the heavens decreed
The fall of Sunderland and Derby County.
The hands of Sagar, Dixie’s priceless head
Made smooth the path to Wembley till that day
When Bolton came. Now hopes are fled
And all is sunk in bottomless dismay.
And so I watch with heart and temper cool
God’s lesser breed of men at Liverpool

That's one way of putting it.

How true that still rings today.
They dont make them like Michael Foot anymore. What a man he was.

I agree I think if he could see what the club has become he would be appalled.
He talked about building a bastion of invincibility but I think he was talking about team on the pitch not the treatment of the club by the press where they are scared to criticise them.
He has created a monster.

Ah ...the Shankly statue.
The much lauded monument ( plus all the mural's & flags) , a tribute to the man that brought them so much success.

Thats the same club that shunned him at Anfield & banned him from Melwood.

But his grandson is right touch that and there'd be demands for a National enquiry.
As the saying goes Offended by everything.........................

I mean just to add to this though, and give some balance, we can all funnel the blame, fairly at the levers of Liverpool Football Club, but there comes a time when our own board are culpable as well. It's easy to slag off journalists, and particularly local journalists, but in all honesty the same standards just aren't being applied to our own board.

Imagine if Liverpool fans tried to torch the HQ of Manchester United, then went and set fire to and urinated on a memorial at OT (say the Munich air memorial). Or started taking stupid pictures by it to mock it as they have done etc. What do you think they'd have done?

We have Bill and Denise who just sit back and let it happen, like they sit back and let everything else happen. You want to know why Echo journalists don't cover it, at a meso level, because they know if they don't report it they get no hassle from Everton but if they report it accurately they get a load of trouble from Liverpool. Thats the reality. People in cultural institutions follow the path of least resistance.

So in fairness, why would Liverpool fan channels or fan groups bother to call out the criminality and disrespect shown again and again to the dead, when Everton can't even do so themselves?

And we wonder why our 150m midfield have coasted/idled through the last 3 seasons and managers. Zero pressure applied from above. Monkey see, monkey do.

Thanks for sharing this. Proves that there is one or two of them with a bit of brain power. As he says, if anyone were to start destroying statues or anything around Anfield, it would be seen as a national disgrace. This adds in to that they clearly don't care about the city that they live in when everything is added together from the past 2 weeks. Would be nice to see Spirit of Shankley help fund the restoration of Dixies statue. Unlikely to see as they aren't directly involved but as a show of standing against some of the idiots who think this is acceptable.
