Sure, I don't doubt that. I'm sure that many would take the view that he so raised the profile of the sport after Festina that he also helped make many cyclists much better off simply because the sport was richer. That's not to condone what he's done at all, merely to say that things aren't always black and white.

yes makes you wonder exactly why wiggins has this point of view...

He was asked the question, and he gave an answer. I'm not sure there's much in it to be honest. I mean we had David Millar running for the head of the cyclists union recently, who are currently headed up by Gianni Bugno, who himself was banned for a few years in 1994. The sport has a past, and it's unfortunate, but it also has a big thing about doping such that it's brought up constantly.

How often do you reckon Pep has been asked about being banned for doping since managing in England? Is his name pre-faced with drug cheat whenever he's mentioned in articles? You know? We're in a world where the Puerto case still rumbles on with athletes from every sport except cycling being exempt from publicity, despite Fuentes working with athletes from football, tennis and all manner of other sports.

the Millar think was an absolute farce, how can he head a cyclists union ??!!

....Breaking News; Sky says it is to end investment in pro-cycling and Team Sky at the end of next year.

I presume this means they don’t want their name associated with a sport that has so much drug and cheating related publicity.

It had a much worse reputation 8 years ago when Sky started ploughing money in....

Anyway, as long as Sky isn't replaced by another sponsor that creates an imbalance of wealth, their withdrawal can only be good for the sport.

Sky withdrawing is a good day for me (In all fairness they have kept on it longer than I had expected). It would seriously amaze me if they manage to find a replacement sponsor, offering the same budget.

[assuming that the new Mclaren-Mehrida team doesn't take over their entire train or something; that would be quite an anti-climax]

Surely any major sponsor withdrawing is bad for the sport? We're in an age when the most successful team in the sport (Quickstep) are straggling around for a sponsor, and the best GT team have just lost their sponsor. Throw in the loss of BMC and you're left with disreputable states and gambling firms. Hard to spin that as a positive in any language.

I'm sorry mate but the dislike I have for Brailsford is very profound. You can like individual Sky Riders, but I can't like the team.

The lotto's are quite okay though from a moral point of view, unlike private gambling companies they actually deal with people who have issues.

And tbf with Quickstep, it's always the same with Lefevre, I honestly believe he puts up a show every year. He has his new co-sponsor now; Deceuninck-Quickstep; and the shirts look entirely the same. Oh and that very rich Czech person; Bakala. They could at least put a bit of effort into their new jerseys though, they look exactly the same. I'll give you BMC though; CCC does seem to be a very weak version of said team. Not entirely fond of all the disreputable states, but there's hardly anything that can be done about it.
