Current Affairs Culture wars & The rise of grifting

I see loads of stories in media outlets saying stuff like ‘Twitter went in meltdown’ and choosing some select tweets as though that actually means anything at all. Most articles I read could be put together by a GCSE student. Do places even employ many journalists? Seems like a total waste of money when they could get AI to do most of it.

Anyways, probably more deserving of the press thread.
That is one of the things that winds me up more than anything. “Writing” an article based on Tweets from some random person whose name is basically a random number generator. And now they might be “verified” thanks to that bellend Space Karen.

This is the issue to be fair - when the right wing cry about “cancel culture” it’s always at most about 10,000 tweets/twitter accounts which in the grand scheme of things is tiny. It’s all just a bunch of rage bait nonsense

I don’t even know if this exists anymore. The demand for new news every 24 hours must mean that no journalist really has time to put in the hours.
Even if they did, most big stories don’t get as much traction as they used to. Are media outlets even interested in big stories now? When I click on ‘most read’ news stories on the BBC the most clicks are given to stories such as a duck adopting a puppy or a celebrity dying.
What type of puppy?

Whats this about the duck?

ProPublica and Frontline, thankfully, still do some amazing deep dives into relevant stuff...but I agree, they don't get much traction.

I fully understand what you are saying I just disagree with it.

Jones and hopkins are in no way comparable.

Hopkins is the culture war. Without it she has no career and would disappear.

Jones was a journalist long before the culture war really gathered pace. Without it, he would still be a reputable journalist and author working at the highest level of the industry.

Journalists and authors writing about social justice has always been a thing.

What hasn’t always been a thing is people with no qualifications, building careers on their extreme opinions, and crowdfunding through social media.

This is something people on the right and the left are guilty of and these are the people to avoid.

You can’t seem to separate the journalist and author Owen Jones from the social media character you’ve been told to hate.

Your comparison is ridiculous and you’re lashing out at posters calling it out.

I’am genuinely interested to hear where he has been consistently wrong if you’re willing to cite examples of this?
You say you understand and then explain that you don't. There's a level of arrogance on top of your ignorance causing you to go round in circles. I have explained my position on the matter, and why, which you are welcome to read as many times as you like.

He wrote a fairly polite and well balanced response there you know. No need to respond like that.

Think you know your argument is bunk and you’re now resorting to petty insults.

Don't agree with that at all, Jimbo.

I mean, it's actually almost funny if people cannot, or should i say will not see, and your boy clearly cannot.

If people don't understand the roles and structures in comms channels then fair enough. But to then pretend that they do and from a position of smug delusion... that's what I'm seeing here.

I'd used the academic term opinion leaders to define their roles in the comms process, I think someone described them both as social commentators, an acceptable description of their roles. I'd assume that it is clear that they fulfil these same roles?

Their content and narratives are aling political lines. Politically they are at opposite ends of the spectrum, or opposite sides of the fence. Ones on the left, one is on the right of the same spectrum/ same field. Their narrative in the culture war follows the political themes that both use, thus the term opposite sides of the coin.

People can pretend that these facts are not true if they like but why be so silly.

Maybe the thread should be renamed as the Owen Jones fan club.

There are so many people on the left where this is all true. Yet, I believe these are the people who are shaping your viewpoint and you’re completely blinded by it.

The ones defending Owen Jones in this thread have also been critical of him.

Anyway, do you care to cite examples of how he is consistently wrong or are you going to dodge that question yet again?
