Would people have been happier if we had signed a top quality first team RB? Such a move would have limited Kenny's opportunities and possibly signalled the end of Colemans Everton career, regardless of how well he recovers. I believe we've made the right decision, we've signed a player whose capabilities are well known to our management team. His signing will allow Kenny to be introduced to the first team in tandem with Martina, a far better option than just throwing him in and hoping for the best. It allows for injuries and tiredness. Also Colemans return is hopefully more likely. Martina can cover other positions as well which makes him a useful squad player. As ever though time will tell.

Holgate is a superlative young centre back, and I believe he will one day be our standout central defender. But he is clearly less effective as RB and he is still very young himself. He will be one of our CBs again this season, and if he is filling that position and Kenny is injured or tired we would be scuppered.
Colemans effective return cannot at this point be guaranteed for Christmas, it could be before or ,I think more likely ,some time after. Either way that's a considerable amount of matches to be short staffed for.

I think a year contract with an option for us of extending it would have been a lot, lot better than handing him three years. Southampton didn't even want him and they are terrible!

Ok stats don't always paint the full picture but imo they help give an idea of what to expect. I compared Cuco and Séamus per 90 mins, both in their first seasons under Koeman and tbh it's not as bad as I was expecting. He'll seemingly be adequate backup til Coleman is fit and takes the pressure off rushing him back hopefully.
