Confirmed Signing Cuco Martina

In theory I don't care about his fee or who he is - if the manager thinks he's a good squad option, the wages are reasonable and no fee involved, then it's a good signing.

However... It's like I said about Gana last summer; it's not the statement signing that you want to kick off with ideally if you have real ambition for the whole window. The impression is we are bringing in free transfers and renewing contracts on average squad options like Mirallas, whilst all the news is about losing big players rather than bringing them in.

Shifting dead wood and those deemed not good enough is great, but massively undermined when we then go out and bring in worse players on contracts, this bloke plays ahead of Kenny it'll be an absolute slap in the face of the academy.

I don't quite get the whole 'it doesn't kick things off very well'. Why does timing matter when we have no games?

So if we signed Messi, Juninho and Dybala and then signed Martina it would be a better signing?

Over if we signed Martina first, and then Messi, Juninho and Dybala. It's just people losing their cool already. Again.

Wait and see what happens.

I think the plan may be to loan Kenny out to a championship team for first team experience.

Good signing. Cover for right back and then a good loan for Kenny in the Championship. Let him learn his trade away from the spotlight.

Why just not give Kenny a chance. I know he's still young, but surely he has to be better than Cuco Martina?

I'm sure he will be given a chance even if Martina does come in.

But it doesn't hurt to have options.

We should have more than enough games next season to alternate. And Holgate - towards the end of the season when we needed to push on - has shown his limitations as a right-back.

It's a mentality issue. I'm a believer in that if you have genuine ambition in football, you go all out on one ridiculous signing like City did with Robinho etc. because it sends the message out about the project and means you'll have a greater chance of attracting others, with or without European football, because they'll be "in on the ground floor" of the whole thing.

Look at it as an outsider - if they're looking at Everton, they may have seen a few headlines about "rich owner, new stadium" etc. etc. but the whole thing falls down like a house of cards when they look a bit closer and think "well, what's actually happened?"

China are having to spend stupid money to bring stars over there, the USA did it to establish themselves too before then. Individual clubs looking to show ambition have to do the same thing - bring in the big star, make a statement and you elevate the standards of the following players coming in. Otherwise you are getting jibbed off by the likes of Gabbiadini in late August as Everton isn't worth kicking up a fuss over to get the move.

This would raise a few eyebrows, and a few pitchforks.

Mirallas then Martina

The only people who would be raising any pitchforks Zat are the ones who have already got a raging hard-on for Koeman/Moshiri to mess up (I'm not saying this is you btw).

It's not exactly impressive but tbh I don't care as the guy is going to be an option to rotate with the young lads until Coleman returns.

It's not a slap in the face of the academy. If they're good enough, they'll come through.

A signing like this is a squad option in case they aren't good enough.

If Kenny makes the grade, Martina would be a squad or reserve option brought on a free with low wages.

If Kenny doesn't, then at least we have an actual senior right back on the books, even if he is a stop gap.
