I have played and watched football my whole life but haven’t once heard the term outside back to describe full backs or wing backs. I’m fairly sure you’ve made it up.

So you have to specify the role the player plays every time correctly? What else would you call them?

Can we use the term center back? Is that okay, or do we have to specify sweeper, libero, ball player, etc.?

Actually they are inverted wingers, inside forwards are a different type of player.

An inverted winger is a modern tactical development of the traditional winger position. Most wingers are assigned to either side of the field based on their footedness, with right-footed players on the right and left-footed players on the left.

So wingers for short, wing forwards if you like, not inside forwards at all.

What's your point, Goat?

Outside back is the most wool thing ever.

Must be a US terminology, probably say its a "Soccer" position.

Never heard of it.
Yeah, whoever came up with the term center back was a real moron, too. We should still be saying right stopper or left stopper or whatever ridiculous terms.

We should never refer to left and right backs as a collective, we should always say "right and left" instead of outside. How silly of us.

And the English gave us the nickname soccer, we didn't make it up.

The only thing worse than the outside winger nomenclature debate itt is Cuco's "defending"

Fair play to him though as he tried and would have been a good 3rd squad LB

Haha outside back, never heard it once through out all my life playing or watching football.

He did what he had to do, the best he could. I can't fault the guy.

I fault Moonhead.

All the best in future career Cuco

Really? It's not wing back? Do you know the difference? That's why you write outside back, genius.

That why some of you sound like morons when you call certain players winger when they are inside forwards. Thankfully us Americans are here to correct you.

In reality, the level of coaching and soccer knowledge is pathetic in the US, so I don't have a ground to stand on, but that doesn't make some of these comments any less stupid.

What is an Outside Back in football (soccer) an how does it differ from a Wing Back or Full Back?

Not berating, just genuinely curious as it's not to my knowledge a term widely used here. For all I know there could be a tactical role in MLS that's not used here in the same way that Sweepers or Liberos weren't used over here but were commonly used in other leagues.
