Lancs won the toss at Taunton and elected to bat, unfortunately Brown went for 13, but at least not batting last on what's usually a huge turner.

Hopefully the legspin of Matt Parkinson and left armer Keshav Maharaj will have huge help from the wicket in the fourth innings of the match.

34 - 1 Davies joined by Croft (both around 10 or 11 not out)

This is a major failure in my eyes. Cook came in as England have traditionally had a senior opener to guide the new man in to the top of the order. For whatever reason, England are going to have to find two capable of it now. Tough ask

A couple of young openers playing well this season are Edrich & Luckhurst !

..48-3, oh dear. Livingstone back in the team but out cheaply.

1 run for 3 wickets as Davies follows for 20. Livingstone the only one not to reach double figures, what a return - some impression

48-4 and Jack Leach has two on the first day

Somerset heavily doctor their pitch to suit, ridiculous that spin plays such a part even on day 1, England's selectors should possibly take note that spinners taking wickets at Taunton means little. Possibly why they've preferred others even if Leach and Bess are now fit and picked.

Later 61-4

The two heroes from Southport are at the crease Bohannon and Vilas

England news for what is now for all intents and purposes with the series already won, the Alistair Cook tribute test,

Often forgotten that perhaps Alistair's greatest achievement as captain was the away series win in India in 2012.

Back to the final test, a squad of 13 announced with Pope and Woakes included, Pope will play the first two days of Surreys championship match before joining up.

Possibly depends on just how green the wicket is and just how fit Woakes is whether he plays, but if dry underneath then it'll probably be both spinners. Ali almost certain to bat at 3.

(possibly makes more sense with the game being dead as far as the series is concerned and the Sri Lanka tour in mind)

..on a positive note, it looks like there’ll be a result. 72-5.

Lancashire have the top two wicket takers in the country : Tom Bailey and Graham Onions. Taken the three wickets so far - now 35-3.
Says how bad is the batting for Lancashire.

All it tells you is Somerset are determined to win the championship and are doctoring wickets massively to help.

Jack Leach 5 wkts on the first half of the first day must tell the England selectors everything about just how difficult it is for a spinner to take wickets at Taunton , just bowl it and let the ridiculous pitch to the rest.

One wicket by a spinner elsewhere is worth at least 5 at Taunton, they shouldn't be conned by Somerset spinners just go on how they do away from there.
