Cricket

I don't think there'll ever be a perfect way of awarding points in cricket because there are just too many variables. I wouldn't say Lancs draws had anything to do with a lack of positive cricket though, in 2 of them they had the opposition 6 or 7 down in the second innings after scoring big totals, and another one was due to rain at Hampshire where the game was pretty well set for a good finish.

That's one of the many drawbacks of reducing fixtures in the County Championship : the variables of the weather.
Agree with both of you, but I would like to see a greater divergence of points between winning and drawing. How that might be done equably ...err...

Changing the points system was part of the Strauss review :

Bowling points scrapped
Batting bonus points only for a team win - 325-399, one point, 400 + two points
Three points for a win, one for a draw
So, a maximum of five points available in a successful win. So, nil points for the losing team.

Certainly something along those lines would be an improvement.

England levelled the series against Pakistan with ease. Pakistan 169-6, England 170-2, 14.3 overs. Phil Salt made the third quickest 50 for England ,off 19 balls, finishing 88*.

One of the few things in the Strauss review I agree with.

Bonus points system should have been scrapped years ago. Daft that teams can lose heavily and go away with 3 or 4 points.

The bonus points in this system are to encourage teams not to do an Essex and produce a 'result' pitch - they would only get 3 points for a win.

So 3 to 5 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and nothing for losing - seems fair to me.
