Cricket

Wonderful but weird day at Old Trafford.

Lancs glided effortlessly to 231-1 in 74 overs, the only wicket coming from a careless shot from Wells when he was on 84. But then Jennings was bowled by a fine delivery from Yorkshire's last bowling resort, George Hill, a delivery which left the batsman staring in disbelief at the previously blameless wicket. From then on wickets tumbled as Hill, previous best bowling 2-12, ran through the Lancs line up, taking the next 5 wickets to finish with 6-26 off 16 overs. Coad chipped in with two wickets in two balls as Lancs limped to the close at 272-8, their hopes of batting Yorkshire out of the game destroyed. Now they will be looking to make it past 300, their hopes depending on Lavelle, 17no.

The only good thing to come from the collapse is that if the pitch continues to play as it did in the last hour or so, Bailey and Williams will be very difficult to play.

Keaton Jennings claims the change of ball altered the course of yesterday's game. The ball landed in a puddle beyond the boundary, Yorkshire complained and the umpires changed it - 'ridiculous' according to former umpire David Lloyd in the commentary box, who pointed out that balls always get wet when there is a damp outfield and are never changed. He's right, unless there was other damage to the ball that the camera didn't pick up.

Jennings reckons the ball they were given, while the oldest in the box, was much newer and harder than the old one and so much more favourable to the bowlers.

It's a fair point but I prefer to give credit to Hill, who bowled beautifully and ran in with great enthusiasm at a time when the other bowlers were wilting. It also didn't help when 2 of the top 3, Wells and Bohannon, got themselves out with poor shots.

Very true, although I'd sooner have them playing for Lancs than disappearing off to the England team!

The mystery is why Sussex let Wells go - I know Jason Gillespie wanted to bring in younger players but that was a huge mistake.

Good to see the art of the bold declaration has been rediscovered!

No play yet at Hampshire, who otherwise look certain to beat Northants and end Lancs's slim championship hopes.
Praying for early wickets and the rain to shift off.

Another example, in my mind of why the CC needs a schedule change and a move to 5 days. You lose a days CC and the game becomes void.
