Cricket

Great game. Fantastic performance by India.

Sibley will go now. Burns too for me but I think they'll persist a bit longer with him. Hameed will get another go but he did nothing to convince me - Peter Moores was right, he should have been left to play county cricket a bit longer. Sam Curran had a poor game and could be left out too.

The captains decided the game.

Look at the Indian field in the last hour compared to ours earlier ?

We had 3 men on the boundary when bowling short, India crowded the bat ( which to Jos Buttler is mental btw ) and then bowled short, got the batsmen guessing and then full length and got the edges.
Straightforward captaincy really.
It’s even worse comparing the fields from both sides when you consider the batsmen they were bowling to. Look at how aggressive and restrictive India’s field was to our top order and then look at our field against their tailender. I was tearing my hair out when I saw their fielding set up and wondering why didn’t we do that earlier, after we got Pant out. I won’t even bother getting started on the bowling and the line and lengths we used either

Sam Curran's two golden ducks must be some sort of record. England should look at the County stats for openers and choose the best two England qualified players. Even if they have never played Test cricket they can't do worse than the shower we've got.
It’s still a massive clique the England cricket team.
Harder to get in to, than out of.

absolute clowns, good job they were all practicing for this type of day in the county champ..

oh wait... no they were busy playing [Poor language removed] & giggles in the ECB's vanity project.

There's been too many passengers in the England side recently. Burns, Sibley, Hameed, Crawley, Lawrence to name just a few are not up to it. The coach has to be questioned as well. For me Silverdud should never have got the gig, not sure what his credentials are to have got the top coaching job in English cricket.

Root is world-class batsman but a bang average captain and the return of Ben Stokes can't come soon enough.

People still go on about how bad the 90s team were but the Gooch/Atherton/Stewart/Hussain/Thorpe/Gough/Caddick team would utterly wipe the floor with this current poor England line-up.

Where we go from here I don't know but big changes are needed.

….the trouble is, there’s not been too much red ball cricket at County level for a while.

Top county opening batsmen? I can think of Jake Libby at Worcester, booted out of Notts to make way for Hameed, who's having an excellent season, and England failure Keaton Jennings at Lancs, who's looked assured and very relaxed, almost as though he's given up on playing for England and just enjoying playing. There are one or two promising youngsters but they seem to be modern day dashers rather than solid.

I look at India and both Rohit and Rahul are converted middle-order players - perhaps England should look to do something similar although I've no idea who they could try. Crawley has opened but he looks out of touch and has had a poor season even in county cricket.

Its got to the stage where I would consider bringing back likes of Vince and Malan, even though both failed in the past.

They at least will show intent to score runs can play a forward defence without the bat coming right across the line.

Next test I'm picking something like this...

Crawley
Burns
Malan
Root
Bairstow
Buttler
Ali
Woakes- if fit
Robinson
Mahmood - assuming Wood is injured
Anderson

India deserved to win.The way England batted is just nor acceptable. Is it down to poor technique, poor coaching, poor attitude or are they just not good enough? Certainly Sibley should be dropped,he has had his chance, maybe move Crawley to open and Root to no 3.

Root should bat where he wants and it would be wrong in my opinion to move him when he's in such good form. You need him in the place he will score most - 4 is ideal for Root and Kohli.
