Yes its a perfectly fair point. I've seen Archer strike a long ball, but he's strugged at test level. A bit similar to Broad. I haver to be honest and say who bats 9-11 I am quite flexible about and dont hold a strong view either way!

Yes but I wouldn't really put Archer and Stuart Broad in the same category. Broad had had a tough time of it since being hit on the helmet all those years ago, since when his confidence has looked shot and his batting been abysmal. In the last few series however it's enjoyed something of a renaissance, bringing back memories of his earlier promise as a 'bowling all rounder' when, especially together with Graeme Swann, he'd regularly provide the sting in the tail.

Agree with others, I think the follow on target is largely immaterial in India, unless they collapse and are nearly 300 behind. If they get anywhere near or surpass it, and one of those is highly likely, then the benefits of bowling last and giving some rest to tired bowlers in 30 degrees heat will far outweigh any temptation to enforce. There's no rain forecast and even a quick one or one and a half session break while hitting out to set an out of reach target gives valuable rest. Quick bowlers can't just go again and even spinners get tired - psychologically a break is massive too.

In India the wicket can be horrendous on the last day, and any enforcement could easily result in England desperately struggling to save a match they've dominated. Ten wickets and more on the last day isn't unusual. Winning the toss is immensely important in India so don't give away the huge advantage of bowling last when the wicket is a minefield.

Joe's luck at the toss could decide the series, it's just that important

Died in a car crash, very fast on his day.

Sad news. I remember Ezra from his Glamorgan days. A very fine bowler who would have played a lot more test matches in another era. I think he had a back injury which caused his pace to drop a bit. Consequently he took part in a rebel tour to South Africa and was banned, but went on to play test cricket for Windies against England in 1990, when he broke Gooch's hand.

Since that incident though, their records will be quite similar. Broad had a good flourish in the Ashes, and I think re approached his batting. That approach would make sense for Archer. He probably just has to get to 10 first though.

Broad batted well making 43 in the last test in South Africa and followed that up last summer with 123 runs for 3 outs averaging over 40, only had one innings against Sri Lanka being left unbeaten on 11 but I don't see any equivalence tbh. Broad's batting looks once again to be a useful asset.

Archer has batted well in the IPL, it just hasn't happened for England yet.

He's done well recently though broad, but you're right, fr along time he wasn't right after that bouncer.

I havnt watched live test cricket since the 2005 Ashes, so forgive me if this is a daft question.

But WTF do the numbers on the back of the players shirts mean?
