Should have declared at tea. England won't have the stamina to bowl twice if India has to follow on.

Not for me. Tests in India are slow burners and the action is on day 4 or 5. Bat as long as possible and get as many as possible then you can attack the rest of the game and use the scoreboard pressure.

At 460 odd, India could still theoretically have won. By batting past 550, its very hard to see how they can win and it changes the whole dynamic.

Tomorrow morning is a little different though. These 2 and Jimmy need to look to score and not waste maidens. Hit out or get out.

I would even dispute that, i think the more delay the better, get more overs into their bowlers legs, more wear into the wicket and more chance of winning. India is so different to England, wickets can clatter on day four and five.

In England you don't leave only two days for 20 wickets but in India almost all the wickets fall in that last phase of the game and collapses are two a penny. You don't need a day to bowl a side out so two days and a session or two is plenty, and you get all the best conditions to do so. These won't score plenty but bat time and keep them bowling is the way.

Tbf possibly all his decent hitting has been in the IPL, we hoped he might make a decent tailender but he's played quite a few tests now, certainly enough to take notice of his average of around 8 which is even lower than Anderson's. I haven't any confidence in his test match batting and haven't really seen anything from him let alone any great pretentions to being proficient at any type of batting.

I would rather have Jack Leach as number nine although none of the last three can bat.

That's fair enough mate. Archer will at some point get a 50-60 though, wheres he survives 20 balls, starts chancing his arm and shots come off for him.

I mean he and Leach are completely different type of batsman. Leach is a perfect bought watchman type, and quite a useful guy who hangs around a bit. A decent number 10 I'd say!

Hope springs eternal and some day in the near future I hope he will make some runs, Leach now averages 16 (admittedly boosted by the Irish innings) but for me his batting at this level is becoming more dependable by the innings. His 14* here could prove invaluable, he helped add add 42 for the ninth wicket and another 11 for the last. Two well struck boundaries showed he can attack on occasion and his confidence is definitely growing. For me he's always the better option (of the three we had left) when there's a batter like Bess at the other end to support.

A great start to the innings by England, however India have gained some momentum since the fourth wicket and look confident with their batting.

They're still miles behind, but a wicket or two soon after tea will do us the world of good to stop this partnership.

Yes its a perfectly fair point. I've seen Archer strike a long ball, but he's strugged at test level. A bit similar to Broad. I haver to be honest and say who bats 9-11 I am quite flexible about and dont hold a strong view either way!
