Butlers was worse!
Buttler was done by one pitching well outside and reversing in to clip the top of off, no comparison tbf. Not a good leave obviously and poor judgement but the ball was an excellent one.

Archer got stuck on the crease he just isn't a good tailender, Jack Leach has at least got a defence.

No, don't agree. It hardly moved. Awful leave. It was just a bang average delivery

I'm afraid I totally disagree, look again it moved appreciably, my eyes aren't deceiving me having looked at it again and again.

Pitched well outside off and moved in to clip off stump just like the last time I looked, and the time before that and the....

First time such movement has been described as bang average

I find it strange that Archer was in ahead of him based on that. I would’ve thought you’d want someone with a good defensive technique out of the tailenders, like Leach, to back up whoever is still left in the middle order in ahead of someone like Archer.

Tbf to Jofra, the ball from Ishant moved in again - he just got the right length to give full value to any reverse

Ishant has bowled so well in this spell, glad to see him off.

I think they are both good balls to be honest. Whatever we say about Archers technique, to get a ball that reverses and hits the top of off, at decent speed is not a great ball to get 1st up for any number 9.

Archer is a much better hitter and a better batsman than Leach. He is very susceptible early though. If he gets in, hes one of those who can strike a ball and score quickly.

Tbf possibly all his decent hitting has been in the IPL, we hoped he might make a decent tailender but he's played quite a few tests now, certainly enough to take notice of his average of around 8 which is even lower than Anderson's. I haven't any confidence in his test match batting and haven't really seen anything from him let alone any great pretentions to being proficient at any type of batting.

I would rather have Jack Leach as number nine although none of the last three can bat.

Only really two results possible now, the pitch is looking much tougher. If Bess and the tail can hang around, bat time as much as runs - the longer the better it'll make the position even stronger. The wicket will only give progressively more help the longer into the game, day four and five it could be really helpful but tomorrow too the longer we can delay them starting.

The chart on Google has 62% the draw, 33% England win, 5% India which probably reflects my opinion atm too

Yeah Archer does have more run scoring options as a batsman as opposed to Leach, who will usually defend until the end of the over, but with the exception of a 30 in New Zealand, Archer has been out early when he’s come in, in test matches anyway (off the top of my head). At least with Leach’s defensive style, it gives whoever he’s backing up a chance to get more runs to our total, like he has done with Bess today.

Should have declared at tea. England won't have the stamina to bowl twice if India has to follow on.
Tough one Dave, can see both points of view. Doubt they'll add that many runs and some overs at their openers may have been the way to go,but looking at the pitch I've a feeling England will bat twice.
