Cricket

I definitely did not expect England to win the match inside 4 hours when I went to bed last night.

Great knock by Buttler, no better man for a chase. Sibley delivered too when it mattered, although he rode his luck by the sounds of it.

He was out 3 times for his 50 wasn't he?

Hes got really lucky today. He's a fish out of water at this level.

Well done to Bairstow and Butler though, who's tempo and runs helped win the game.
I don’t disagree. Was tongue in cheek. He’s not pretty to watch but he’s a stubborn batsman and if he can get a bit consistency going can free up our middle order to play some shots. I see a longer international career for him than Burns to be honest but time will tell.

In Mike Atherton's words, Sri Lanka will be thinking 'How on earth did that happen?" They've managed to produce a quite appalling batting performance to grab defeat from the jaws of victory....well not quite that, but with a first innings lead and bowling last they seemed to be in a fairly impregnable position

The big players for England turned up, we were so reliant on Joe Root's brilliant marathon innings for the runs but he's been ably supported by Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Dan Lawrence and even Dom Sibley (finally coming good in the last chance saloon). Our two big star seamers Anderson and Broad stood out with the ball, but Mark Wood performed a commendable support role. You have to mention the spinners who must have learnt so much on these turning wickets, both positive and negative, they must be grateful they took advantage of the home sides generosity to bag some impressive figures in two of the innings. It must also be mentioned that Jos Buttler kept beautifully throughout

Sri Lanka alone though have produced all the truly horrendous kamikaze cricket, it's they that have lost when they seemed to have all the conditions and advantages on their side, producing two of the most spectacularly inept days of cricket you're likely to see, and it's that which lost the series. Their one consolation being the outstanding performance of their new star spinner Embuldeniya.

I know mate!

It's hard on him V Burns. I don't see either being good enough if England want to be the best in the world. Sibley will get days like today where he is given not out 3 or 4 times when he's out and scratch his way to a half century. He won't punish bowlers though.

I'm also not a big fan of Burns, so it's a hard one for me on them two!

Yeah openers are the big worry for me, going into the India series. Today was the first time our openers got to double figures in this series. Elsewhere in the batting department, we’re in relatively good shape, Root has had a great series, Bairstow also looking very assured and think it’s a shame he’s not going to be in India. Butler showing good form with the bat also and Lawrence gave a good showing in the first test and will be around in future tests I would imagine. Add to that, Stokes and Pope who weren’t there, which gives us a good number of options from 3-7.

Sir Lanka will be very dissapointed, and to be fair you could see that from Sangakarra's frustration. I mean I don't think the pitch detoriated as much as people state, but there is certainly an advantage batting 1st, which they did well.

They seem to give a fair few wickets away in both collapses which will frustrate them. I suppose that marks good cricketers from poor ones, your ability to make the right decisions. I don't think any of the England lads today gave their wickets away.

As for England it is really good series win. To win away in the sub continent, especially after losing 2 tosses is a good achievement. Yes I fully understand people will say it was down to Root, and in a large part it was. But Root is a world class player. He's in the top 5-6 batsman in the world. He's probably the best England batsman of my lifetime. It's not good fortune to me, it's just a world class player doing what they do.

Likewise Anderson with the ball. Forget his age, he remains world class. Without his economy rate, never mind his wickets, England are nowhere near in this game. Sri Lanka make a massive score, comfortably 500+. He remains the 1st name on the team sheet from a bowling perspective, home or away. They have to manage his workload, which they are doing, but he should not be written off.

Outide of that, with the bat Bairstow has done himself no harm and I like the look of Dan Lawrence too. The openers struggled starting against Spin, but we know Crawley is top class so there will be no worries there. With the ball, Broad, Leach and Bess also didn't do themselves any harm. I thinkwe missed having Ali for Curran as that 3rd option, though I'd expect that spot to be filled by Stokes when he's fit.

Bess is a funny cricketer. He doesn't to me have a particularly appealing bowling action, but he is a nuggety cricketer and a really useful number 8. The runs he made with Root were critical.

England will be pleased overall though. It was a young team outther eand lots of players got good experience. I think with Pope, Lawrence and Crawley they have got 3 really talented young batsman. You look at Root, Stokes and Butler around them, and we probably need to settle on 1 more batsman to fill the remaining slot.

Just imagine how good this side could be with a couple of decent openers. Not a fan of either Sibley or Burns, need to pull a couple of rabbits out of the hat there I think.

In a way it shows how far the team has come that they are now the weak links of this team (whereas for a period they look decent).

I have just put above but Lawrence, Crawley & Pope all look very decent to me. Yes they are not flawless, but few at 22/23 are, but they all look talented and like they belong. Buttler, Root and Stokes aroundthem give sus 6 of the 7 slots. For me at present, Bairstow, Sibley and Burns are competing for the final slot.

Sibley worries me. He was fortunate not to get out 3 times today. Had he been, it's 6 dismissals in the series for about 70 runs. He got lucky today, but he won't keep getting lucky. And lets be honest, the Sri Lankan fields to him were abysmal. They didn't plug the area nad shots he scores off (square leg to mid on for 1). I'm sure they had a guy on the reverse sweep for him at one point! He wont have it so easy with better cricketing nations.

I saw his interview after as well, and to be honest that worried me. He looked terrified, full of doubts and completely self critical. It seemed like he was amazed he made it to 50, and was just going on about trying to last 20-30 balls as an objective. He bats like that's what hes trying to do, but you kind of hope that isn't his thought process. He seems more aware than anyone he doesn't belong at this level.

Nasser has it right imo when saying to win this test having lost an absolutely massive toss, was even more surprising and meritorious than winning the first test. Here the wicket was absolutely flat for the best part of the first two days whereas in the first test the wicket showed some signs of turn even on day one.

Joe straight away himself mentioned having lost the toss and having the worst of conditions as a massive factor and so making this win special....."It was a fine performance, to come out on top having lost the toss on a wicket where we had the worst of it for the majority of the game. The way we stuck to the task in the first innings with the ball, and then dealing with pressure in the second innings, I thought a number of guys in a difficult chase showed maturity, calmness and poise to see us home."

Winning the toss here should have been a match winning moment in the game, incredible that it wasn't.

England play 17 test matches this year, including away tours to India and Australia with proper test series (not two consecutive one offs) an incredible number.

17 tests is far more than most teams play in the now widely discredited and ridiculed test championship over several years. That's a concept that just doesnt work, how can 10 or 11 tests consisting of mainly two test series with a huge percentage at home, equate to more than twenty with a large percentage of proper three to five test series away from home? There just isn't a fair or equatable way of judging when some teams don't play each other while others play them four to eight times.

You can't have a test championship without richer cricket nations helping out the poorer to play it. Test cricket is just too financially prohibitive to play for so many countries, for them it costs money they can't afford while their one dayers make money, naturally they play white ball cricket almost all the time.

Rob Key said working it out was like doing a particularly fiendish sudoku, a chess grandmaster might have a chance. Either a serious redistribution of wealth from India (by far the wealthiest board), Australia and England or abandon it - don't just carry on with such a concept which noone understands or cares about. Realistically no such massive help is very likely so just abandon it.
