Pleased to Sri Lanka competing well as I've always had a soft spot for them since seeing them beat India in the 79 World Cup, two years before they became a Test team.
In those days India treated 1 day cricket (60 overs) as if it was beneath them but their team contained the likes of Gavaskar, Vengsarkar, Viswanath, Kapil Dev, Mohinder Armanath, Bedi and Venkat. Sri Lanka, in contrast, were full of enthusiasm and had some very stylish batsmen in Dias and Duleep Mendis who were a joy to watch. They also had a good leg-spinner in DS De Silva, and I suspect if they had someone of his quality to bowl at the other end from Embuldeniya they would win this current match. They were very innocent in those days - it wasn't until Ranatunga took over as captain that they became more streetwise.
For England, Root looks to be right back to his best, at least against spin and mediocre medium pace, the Indian attack will be a far tougher challenge. Buttler also looks good - even keeping wicket well so far. Anderson was brilliant and Broad was excellent in the 1st Test. Mark Wood has bowled well too, and with Stokes and Archer to return for India I think they'll probably bowl with only one spinner, probably Bess for his batting
I heard some talk of Amar Virdi on the commentary. I'm a fan of his but he'd bat at 11 and his fielding has been substandard, although he looked a lot fitter last season. If England were seriously thinking of playing him, though, they would surely have picked him against Sri Lanka rather than India.
