So England have finally left Moeen Ali out, just days after Morgan expressed his hope that England could begin to prepare for the next two World Cups, both to be played in India, and on a pitch expected to help the spinners later on.
Here's Moeen's statistics for this season:
Batting: 0,1, 8,1 , 61 , 2, 13*, 23, 6
Bowling: 0-37,0-27,0-51,0-10,1-10,0-9,0-8,0-5,0-59
So he managed one wicket and one good innings.
To me England have been extraordinarily patient with him; they desperately want him to succeed for the balance of the side, just as they wanted Buttler to succeed in the Tests. Unfortunately, his figures are so bad they've had no option but to leave him out. Are there any alternatives to Moeen who could play the same role in the team - reasonable spinner and sufficient batting ability to be able to play important lower order innings?
I can't think of any other than Lancashire's Liam Livingstone.
I don't believe Livingstone can force his way into the team as a batsman alone but with his burgeoning ability to bowl a mixture of off-spin and leg-spin - he bowled Alex Hales with a leg spinner the other night - and his experience of playing T20 all around the world - as a batsman - he could be a very handy player for England going in at 7 in T20 and 50 overs. I understand he's been working very hard on his bowling in the nets but needs to gain confidence by bowling in actual games, which makes his sitting around as stand-by with no chance of playing all the more frustrating.
It's too late for this season - the Ireland games would have been ideal - but I think it's something England should consider next season or in any winter tour. When he was first picked, Moeen rarely bowled for Worcester, less than Livingstone bowls for Lancs. If he is given a chance then England would have to be as patient with him as they've been with Moeen throughout his England career. His statistics couldn't be much worse than Moeen's this season and, unlike Moeen, he's one of the better fielders in the country.
