The perennially underestimated Woakes MoM. Buttler showing why England desperately want to keep him in the team.

A triumph for the selectors batting Woakes at 7 and playing the extra bowler.

Congrats to the Lancs groundsman for producing such a great pitch, and three excellent Test pitches in three weeks.

Jos Buttler one of few players in world cricket who can get a team back into contention in a 4th inmings run chase like that. He's kept very poorly, but i don't want to drop him. That innings was top class. Shah is a top bowler and was bowling into huge rough yet he scored well.

If he cant keep well enough I want him to bat. That might actually be the way to get Foakes into the team. Batting 6 behind Jos, with Crawley left out.

Well done woaksey, great knock by buttler to just about keep his place, but has got to improve with the gloves, probably shouldn't be getting out to a reverse sweep in those circumstances, take the team home!

Pakistan must be gutted, won most of the sessions in that match, but it'll be a good learning curve for their young seamers.

Hmm, i hope they don't take credit from that, that was an utter fluke, their team selection was abysmal imo. Crawley hopefully back for the next test whether stokes can bowl or not. Just a much better balance.

Being one up another reason to solidify the batting. But assuming Stokes can bowl then its a no brainer anyway. You only need stokes and 4 frontline bowlers.

A more tranquil day at Durham than at Old Trafford but a good one for Lancs, bowling Durham out for 180 and reaching 33-0 at the close, mainly thanks to some wild bowling from Brydon Carse. The wickets were spread around with three for Gleeson and one for the impressive medium pace of Balderson. Also a first wicket for Liam Hurt, a long hop pulled straight to Vilas.

I wouldn't call it an utter fluke but you're right, Crawley will probably play next game.

Wow, absolutely brilliant - what an unlikely comeback and what a win. Chris Woakes an absolute hero for getting back his batting form in the nick of time and Jos Buttler went a long way to redeeming himself with a classic knock.

(Kettleborough did his best to make it exciting, continuing his and Illingworth's shocking umpiring. Hawkeye got him out of jail saying it may just have possibly shaved the bails when he gave Buttler out just about umpire's call but a dreadful decision on the pitch from him - Buttler was well down the wicket too, how could he be so certain? - idiot)

For once I agree with Warney, Buttler has to be in the team for the full package, he had a nightmare with the gloves in this one but the critics quickly forgot how he'd performed behind the stumps in the three previously. he is a decent keeper in English conditions standing back with seamers, which is the vast majority of the time.

Chris Woakes how could they even contemplate leaving him or Anderson out if Stokes could bowl, it should have been Archer or Anderson.

Archer and Anderson out for me next test and Crawley and Wood in.

Woakes bailed the selectors out. At 117-5, I certainly thought it was curtains. Pakistan's inexperienced pace attack caved in.

Is Buttler good enough to play as a batsman only? His keeping to spin is woeful. Bess was handled with ease by their batsmen and when he did get the better of them, he was let down by his keeper.

I think England should drop a pacer(Jimmy?)for a better keeper. Foakes is mentioned a lot. He has an FC average in the 30s which is serviceable for a lower middle order batsman. Give Bess the series? Or do they play Leach?
Openers are very poor. How do they solve that?

Agree about archer, but I'd keep Anderson in and the left arm of Curran maybe for variety
