I know he got a duck, but we scored 469 woth Crawley at 3!in the 2nd test v wi in what was our best first innings at home for years.

... They ripped it up in the 3rd test which seemed to be based on the weather, but i don't know why they've stuck with it here. Regardless of how the stokes situation has played out, it was a poor decision and that batting line up is way too short, how did they not see this coming?

Perfectly on queue with my post ha

To be fair if Stokes is fit to bowl then its an easier decision. But they need to pick the best 4 bowlers. I'd probably make 2 changes. A batter for Anderson or Woakes and Curran for Bess.

Its not good to have no spinner but no point picking one who is ineffective. They didnt want to make a tough decision this week.

Said it before, the lack of trust they show in bess they may as well get root to bowl those overs.

Thought I'd have a quick glance at England's first innings scores in the first test of a series :

2019 :
against West Indies - 77
against Ireland (only the one test of course) - 85
against South Africa - 181
Of the other two series against Australia and New Zealand, although reasonable scores were posted, both opening tests were Los.

This year, 204 against the West Indies and today, 219. I'm sure they'll take the lessons on board and seek to improve, again.

219 is a poor effort, but it should only be about 50 short, not over a hundred. They allowed Pakistan to get far more than they should on that wicket as well. I think it's a collective problem this week.
