Cricket

There is as much interest in cricket in Ireland as there is in Russian philosophy.

A lot of the rugby playing schools up north all play it. Its probably seen mainly as a middle class thing in and around Belfast. Its very big up round Derry as well. Use to get absolutely trounced when I played teams from up round there. But outside of Dublin, not sure if there are many clubs at all in the south.

In the south is what I meant . Majority of counties would have no teams. And tonight's game would barely register

I really enjoyed playing it and still would if it wasn't for our weather. But its not much fun wasting a full Saturday to head off to the back end of nowhere to play for half an hour then watch it lash with rain.

But there is no better sport on a warm sunny day. I can see why its huge in Australia.

The vast majority of the team are from Northern Ireland although they've had their fair share of Australians and naturalised players from other parts. The South African Campher just the latest.

Tbf it was so unimportant it would barely register here too really if it hadn't been on TV and something to watch, virtually all the main players are in the test squad in a secure environment so not even playing. Even the series was already won so it was just what margin they won or lost by.

Rain forecast for Manchester yet again as per really,, a decent-ish chance we just may get some play at some stage but wouldn't depend on it. It would hardly be a Manchester test without at least one day completely washed out.

What it may do is help England's decision making on selection with Bess given the axe in a straight swap for Crawley, especially if the weather is the only story today.

The forecast looking a little better now, maybe the rain has moved through overnight or maybe it's more unpredictable and showers.

Manchester will no doubt have the magnet on full power to try and get some from somewhere even if everywhere else is baking.

My own thoughts for the test today. Unless they are resting Anderson, I can see no sense in him not playing. I thought he bowled very well against the Windies and was unlucky. Very little to seperate him and Broad who clearly bounce off each other. I saw some analysis that said before the 2 Windies test matches, he was on the best run of home form from an English bowler in the previous 20 tests than has been seen since Jim Laker or whatever (wickets at about 16.5).

Looking at him from 2014, he's taken 160 wickets at home at an average of 19.2. It's a phenomenal run of world class bowling and for me he'd be first name on the sheet.

More broadly they hve to consider what rotation means. For me the early test matches, particularly at Andersons home ground he and Broad should play. If you get ahead in the series then tinker then.

I also think in England, Woakes is a good enough cricketer to earn his place. And Archer, unless he needs a rest should play. I think those are enough from a bowling perspective, as we know Root can roll his arm over. If we had a spinner knocking the door down I'd consider them, and I like Bess but at this stage he woudn't be in. I think he needs to probably improve his batting a bit, and show he's a genuine allrounder.

So for me I go with the above 4, Stokes as a back up 5th bowler and Root as a spin option. Crawley would come back for me.

The left field selection, might be Curran to play over Crawley. If you were really worried Stokes's ability to bowl, I'd be looking the Curran route as opposed to Bess. Like Bess he probably needs to cement his batting a bit and make himself into a good number 7, as going away from home he won't be as effective with the ball, but the different angle he has and his ability to swing the ball gives England something different.

It should be a good series. For all their fault Englandare very formidable at home (as most teams are) I can't remember a series lost at home in some time. Another low scoring series though I suspect, which always produces great cricket.

The annoying thing last night, is because of the current situation there may be a large time until the next game so we have to ponder that defeat even longer

... Oh, they're playing a few hours later on the next day.
