this does my head in. Why on earth is he not playing??? On the debate last night Alec Stewart was telling everyone... 'Parkinson doesn't play first class games for Lancs... lets see how he does first'
well Alec... he has played 20FC games and averages 25 with the ball
Ben Stokes best cricketer in the world
Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Sachin Tenduldar, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussein, Nathan Lyon, Tim Paine, Rob Key please keep five day tests.
Michael Vaughan - the only one standing up for 4 day tests
I can't see Michael winning that argument.
Ireland and some other 'lesser' sides perhaps, especially if played on a two day wicket like Lords last summer but no 'proper' tests anywhere should be reduced imo.
Parkinson was injured at the start of last season so wasn't available for the first few games. He then played a couple of games in the 2nd eleven before being called into the 1st team where he immediately picked up 5 wickets. It doesn't help that so many fixtures are crammed into April and May - Shane Warne said that when he played for Hampshire he barely bothered bowling himself before the end of May, so it's very tempting for Lancs to play four seamers and a batting all-rounder as the spinner (Maxwell last season, Livingstone next) in that period.Alec Stewart said that he only played four championship games for Lancs last season and questioning why that was, inferring there must be a reason (paraphrasing but almost his words)
Graham Onions his Lancs colleague tonight said Alec was exactly right he needs to play every single game in the championship side.
He would potentially pose much more of a threat on the fifth day but probably couldn't be relied on to do the crucial long containing job Bess did in the first innings which was so instrumental to building such a strong position.
It's harsh on Parkinson but the fact Lancashire aren't picking him for every game doesn't do his case any favours.
He also bowls the ball quite slowly which isn't so detrimental but you need to be extremely accurate over very lengthy periods or be punished in test cricket.
It's tough to expect containment bowling the ball slowly in your first test match when it can take a leggy along time to perfect such a skill at the higher level.

The selection of Bess ahead of him proved to be the right one as England won. Bess did a better job containing SA in the 1st innings than Parky would have done. Although he's accurate for a leg spinner, apart from Warne, he's never been asked to bowl like that for Lancs, they use him to attack, so the chances are SA would have found it easier to score against him and consequently crept past England's poor 1st innings score. On the final day, though, I've no doubt he would have been more dangerous than Bess and Denly, but would England have been in that position if Bess hadn't bowled so accurately in the 1st innings? Parky may have to wait for Sri Lanka for his debut where the conditions will be favourable but the batsmen play spin better than SA do.
Looking forward to the 3rd Test - two well matched but flawed teams: Ben Stokes could prove to be the difference between them.
And if the Test finished after 4 days the players get the rest that this move is supposed to be about.Wish they'd shut up about it. How the hell does one day less make any difference to a schedule anyway? Imagine Tests in the sub continent? One team scores 700, the other gets to 400 before it finishes. The stats completely back up that more Tests go the 5 days and not many finish in 4 so it's just some stupid argument to fill air time that should never be discussed!
Well at least he played most of one Test. Let's hope he doesn't tour Sri Lanka and gets fit for the matches this summer against the West Indies and Pakistan.

James Anderson: England bowler ruled out of final two South Africa Tests with rib injury
James Anderson has been ruled out of the final two Tests of England's tour of South Africa with a rib injury.www.bbc.co.uk
Thirty and injury prone, what could possibly go wrong ?Reports indicate Mark Wood rather than Jofra Archer may be selected as a replacement for Anderson in the third test. Apparently Wood had clocked 95mph in the world cup and his extra pace through the air being preferred on what promises to be a slow pitch.
Big risk playing Wood without any match practice. Although his pace can be a game changer.
Ideally Archer will be available.
