A bit of resistance today, but nevertheless Lancashire closing in on a thumping win : Sussex 300-8, still 67 runs behind. Glamorgan not winning their match, Derbyshire in third unlikely to win their game. I think there are only four Championship matches left, so with three teams promoted this season Lancashire are virtually guaranteed promotion to Division One.

Bad news I'm afraid as Nick Hoult the journalist definitely has good connections with Ed Smith and the England setup and is invariably on the money.

Nick Hoult writes that privately England do not expect Archer to be fully recovered until the second test and they may have to do without him in the first.
They must have been hoping Wood and Archer would both be fit and provide a real pace partnership but that doesn't look likely to happen until the third or fourth ashes test now.
Olly Stone can match those two for pace and may see an opportunity to force his own way into the reckoning against Ireland.
It's looking increasingly likely that Broad and Anderson will open up the bowling in the first test if Archer is ruled out, with Curran favourite for the other seamers spot alongside all rounder Stokes and Moeen.
