You mean InCapability Brown -JokeI'm finally getting round to sorting the garden out. Never got the time before because at the weekend my other half would be at work or we'd be out somewhere. Now neither can happen I've turned into Capability Brown.
you do realise the gardens he landscaped were a massive size......I've just spent all day digging up trees. Incapability Brown is a pretty accurate description of me right now.You mean InCapability Brown -Jokeyou do realise the gardens he landscaped were a massive size......
nothing like a bit of Horticulture to ease your worries![]()
Right first thing to remember id before you lay any drain you have to make sure you have an out let of where you water is going to an avenue to escape your dug out drain has to slope into it - the most common drainage farmers first used ever was a dyke around each field area a massive channer dug out by passing clay soil around the four corners of their fields.....I've just spent all day digging up trees. Could do with some of your tips on garden drainage too.
Thanks Joe. Its a bit with a slope that plateaus at the bottom, so the water drains down to it then settles. Doesn't get much sun either. I've dug some trenches and filled them with some hardcore and gravel so they can drain out a bit better -my dad is a handy gardener so gave me a few tips.Right first thing to remember id before you lay any drain you have to make sure you have an out let of where you water is going to an avenue to escape your dug out drain has to slope into it - the most common drainage farmers first used ever was a dyke around each field area a massive channer dug out by passing clay soil around the four corners of their fields.....
However in a garden chose the lowest area and make a massive sump hole -unless you are cleaver enough to pipe into your drainage household system a massive technical expensive job ...
So in your lowest wettest spot in your garden dig a massive deep hole you must bypass any clay {which holds water } get past the subsoil } as far as you can dig, and pick axe etc a big circular hole is ideal - then at the base throw in half bricks small broken flags leaving air holes si it is permeable then fill in the rest with very coarse gravel -The replace 3 -8 inches of the good soil that was near the surface - from your highest part of your garden dig deep channels into your sump hole so the water will head to the main sump - all this depends on the size of your garden again the channels must bypass the clay and be deep, and filled with coarse gravel chippings,and filled with your best soil .....
You will have to calculate how many drain trenches you need and have a good fall of land into the size of the sump you need - it's hard graft , but the cheapest way of doing it - eg if it was 1/2 an acre you would need a herringbone drainage system putting in at huge cost, if your garden is really wet and flooded you may need more than one deep sump hole - note before backfilling any drain put a hose with water running on to see if you have the correct fall in the land to lead your water to the sump again do not put clay over the gravel {holds water}
get rid of the clay soil in what you dig out do not use it anywhere in your garden - then do a PH test to see if your soil is acid neutral or alkaline - determining on what plants you can plant in the future
I have to grow alkaline plants lime loving or neutral - acid loving plants ar a big NO.... some plants tolerate either or..
If you firm dig it over and sow hardwearing grass seed on ebay after you sort the drainage out you'll need min one inch loose tilth to sow a big handful of seed per square metre water anytime drys put 7-10 days germination firm the area with an Indian dance to firm the tilth then take the seed in lighlly with a good rake - throws grass seed over-the-counter top of the covered area 1\4 of an inch for the birds so they don't dig for the grass seed you have buried lightly....Thanks Joe. Trying to get it well drained so I can do a bit of a secret garden type set up for my daughter to play about in, so need it to be fairly firm underfoot.
