Current Affairs Cost of living…

A couple of big jobs have fallen through so I won’t have enough earnings by the end of this tax year to sort my housing situation, so need to consider other options. Shared housing is a no go due to various factors.

Fortunately, I have half decent savings. I’m considering getting a bigger van to use for work/living in. It’d allow me to travel around for work, at least. I know of a good value storage facility I could leave my tools in when not used. Other than that I can only think of a residential caravan park with a static caravan etc.

Any ideas appreciated. I’m sure there’s things I’ve not considered.

There`s quite a few residential places out in Cheshire. They`re more " lodges " rather than static caravans.

They`re all in really nice spots, Delamere and around there.

From what I know about them, they tend to be populated by retired people. who`ve down sized and cashed in on their houses.

I`m pretty sure they`re all leasehold, with a ground rent to pay and even though they`re very nice, you`d have to do your homework re lease / ground rent etc.

I fella I worked with`s dad retired to one out by Acton Bridge, just past Runcorn. ( lovely location and his lodge was top spec )

Clearly I’ve got a lot of research to do here. One thing that puts me off about a lodge is you’re locked in, and the upfront costs would likely clear me out entirely. Plus, you’ve got issues with a depreciating asset with a very limited market to sell on to.

With a DIY camper I could possibly make a profit or at least break even, as I’d do all the work myself. Might have to get a bit clever with storage etc.

Yep, they’re not cheap, but they’re incredibly thermally efficient, so the heating bills would be negligible.

Have you considered buying one and looking for somewhere to put it, that wouldn’t lock you into a lease - a private plot.

You’d obviously have to hook it up to the leccy and the water, but it may be something that’s worth considering ?

I wouldn’t advise living in a camper van mate, okay for a holiday, but not full time.

No idea even where to start with all that. A camper would genuinely be an upgrade on some of the shared housing I’ve lived in.

I’ve been speaking with a stonemason in the Peak District and am going to do a few days to help, hopefully at the end of the month. Looks really nice around there, so you never know.

Tonnes of construction going on in Lisbon where van living is a lot easier. Find a few rich Brits and you’re laughing.

I’m no expert on the subject, but I would expect that I wouldn’t be able to get my prescriptions any more if I went abroad. One of them is quite expensive I believe.

Depends where you go to be honest mate. You're going to be wading through red tape anywhere in Europe.

Over in South East Asia though I was able to just wander into a chemist and buy my meds over the counter.

From the condition you've mentioned though as you know the meds aren't easily available. If you're going abroad I'd probably explain the situation to your doc and see if they will give you an extended script, unless you've got a history of overdoses they'll probably be amenable to it. That's just for a holiday though, god knows how it would work if you were moving or working abroad.

I would look at one bedroom flats if a shared house isn't an option. I slept in the car a few years a go for a month when going through a divorce but showering will be a nightmare unless you live near a motorway service station and laundrettes were extortionate even for small loads.
Look on spareroom for a static caravan, or onthemarket for 1 bedroom flats.
I'm in shared accommodation at the moment. But I've got my own bathroom so the only room we share is the kitchen.

Aye, it’s probably quite unlikely that it’d ever be workable when thinking realistically.

Unfortunately due to many factors, my income hasn’t been as good as I’d hoped. I lost at least a month’s work over winter due to weather, and I’ve had two decent sized jobs be delayed until next tax year.

I’ve also got strong evidence to suggest someone has been removing my business adverts from local shops/builders merchants. I’m 99% sure it’s someone I used to work for.

Not been an easy ride since going on my own.

Get in!!
Unexpected fall in food prices, driven by price cuts for bread and cereals, cream crackers, sponge cake and chocolate biscuits. Furniture prices also fell (as in, new furniture is something that we all buy on a regular basis) And of course real Tories inherit furniture.

You doing the whole self-promotion social media thing as strongly as you can? I get that it’s a ballache, but there’s value in leveraging contacts when you’re working for yourself. Either way, I feel for you - being your own boss is stressful when you’re the one paying your wages. 👍🏻
