Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Tis true. They are hoping they work well together.

Like most new medicine, its all a bit hit and miss, but they obviously have done it before, so are confident it wont be a complete waste of time/dangerous.

Didn't know that. Had seen the reports, but didn't know it was going ahead (or close to).

Same, for everybody!

My housemate got her first jab mid-December (like 16th/17th iirc) and then her second jab in the first week of Jan, but think that was purely because she got her first before the cut-off point.

It's crazy how they worked it out but you've just got to trust in them as there's not much else we can do. I'm glad she's had one, would obviously be happy If she'd had both at the correct time though. Not that she moans, she's an absolute trooper my missus

This is unbelievable news this if it works out well. You'll have patients being able to be moved from ICU after a few days to a nornal ward therefore lessening the stress and working at over capacity for the staff.

I imagine there'll be so much more treatment for this thing inside the next 6-8 months. The vaccines are just the start.

And that's why we will be able to have some form of normality soon enough.

The vaccines stop the serious illness, and then those that still need hospital will have treatment which is leaps and bounds on from what we had now. My housemate says that the people they treat in Sheffield, whether they live or die is usually - and I don't mean this to sound horrid because I know you've had this bad - is down to how healthy those people are. The treatment, they know what they're doing a lot more than they did in March, but each individual case is obviously different. People are stronger at fighting it off than others are and ultimately at that stage then there's only so much the doctors can do.

The hope just has to be that with vastly reduced numbers going into hospital, there'll be vastly less people in that position.

As the evidence mounts (see today re latest variant), I dont see much of a row back; I will leave it to to conclude what their position would be if indeed, their uninformed guess, was correct
Great news on one variant, there are 1000s emerging. And still waiting for some effective UK border management. And not so great on transmission.

There is still risk of transmission and until we are as population are more or less fully vaccinated, caution should remain, or the terrible dead record will continue rise, and all the round select committee on COVID is already predicting £11billion annual welfare bill on supporting younger fitter survivors.

Just a repeat of same commentators and politicians with same with mindset who resisted any form lockdown or change behaviour to combat this virus, who simply want to get back to it, and have little regard of the consequences.

Not a clue if its started, but they are deffo gonna have a look.

It reminds me of a case in NYC a while back. Some bloke had a lifetime condition, that required a cocktail of drugs. The poor bloke contracted Aids, but the medication he was already on totally supressed the HIV. Complete fluke. Like penicillon was.

Yes but only tested on 30 patients so far. A bit more about it:

The medicine fights the cytokine storm — a potentially lethal immune overreaction to the coronavirus infection that is believed to be responsible for much of the deaths associated with the disease.
It uses exosomes — tiny carrier sacs that shuttle materials between cells — to deliver a protein called CD24 to the lungs, which Arber has spent decades researching.

“This protein is located on the surface of cells and has a well known and important role in regulating the immune system,” said researcher Shiran Shapira of Arber’s lab.

The protein helps calm down the immune system and curb the storm. “The preparation is inhaled once a day for a few minutes, for five days,” Arber said. “The preparation is directed straight to the heart of the storm — the lungs — so unlike other formulas… which selectively restrain a certain cytokine, or operate widely but cause many serious side effects, EXO-CD24 is administered locally, works broadly and without side effects.”

The medicine will now move on to further trial phases.

Just about getting over my second jab of Pfizer, not messing it knocked me for six, run 5- 10k every second day, in the gym the other, live healthy and have a high level of fitness.

First jab was grand I’d say I was at about 90% of normal, a bit of pain in the arm for a couple of days. Second jab, on the button of 21 days, floored me, slept most of the day yesterday, weak, fatigue, nausea, fever, swollen arm, headaches, basically floored - two days of work - but coming around now.

Based on my expierence the second jab was the one that activated and stimulated the immune system to the DNA of the virus. The first jab was the primer, the body recognising the threat, grand. The second was the body absolutely going to war on the second dose of DNA, haven’t been that sick in years. I’d say I’m awash with antibodies now.

Anyhow just a heads up to anyone waiting for round 2 Pfizer, I thought after the first, ah yeah I’ll be grand after not having a problem after the first, but the second absolutely floored me. Might just be my immune system mind, but heads up.

My missus got the Pfizer on the 23rd December due to her job. It was supposed supposed be 3 weeks spacing and then she was told in the new year they were spacing hers out to 12 weeks. She deals with covid patients every single day she's in work so I sincerely hope the calculated risk they've taken spacing it out out that length of time works.

Same here on the 23rd.

Pick and mix as predicted... Almost guarantee it will be Pizfer AZ and not the other way round.

Personally as it stands I would refuse, point blank, my good will only goes so far, my physical health is one of the few things political ideologies can't play about with.

Step too far..It will be echoed! I'll sit out for the next round.

The crazy thing is Toff that I'm not sure it boils down to how healthy you are. It's a case of if the body responds to the medication. Don't get me wrong your in a better position if you haven't got underlying health conditions but it definitely felt a little like the luck of the draw that some respond, some don't. When I came out 2 people I know went in, one is still in and in a bad way, the other has just come out and can barely walk up the stairs.

Anyway, like you say mate they will be coming up with all kinds of new meds and ways to treat it and when the worst happened and I ended up in hospital, the staff were just amazing and so positive and mentally that put me in such a determined mood.

I honestly don't know what my missus would do. Haven't had a chance to have a chat with her about that potential situation and what he opinion would be.

I'll let you know though if that crops up.

There is efficacy and there is real world effectiveness (health science parlance) and as we are still in the first for most part. For me wonky eyed can jog on.
