Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I think we are lucky that the outbreak happened in a country where there is a lot of state control, otherwise it could be a lot worse.

It doesn't follow that I'd like to live there.
Yes, I agree. Imagine having a billion people with it in one country, freely travelling the world for weeks.

I think they hid the problem until it couldn’t be denied.....
Maybe they didn't realise just how bad it was Pete. It's a new virus so they would be learning from it on the go. For instance they wouldn't have known it had an incubation period for 14 days or even longer, and once that was known the horse has already bolted.

But you can't deny that once they realised the severity of the disease, the lock down they put in place was so harsh you wouldn't get way with it in countries like ours. I mean they were literally locking people up in their own homes.

It's in China's interest to keep this type of thing under control. Their economy was heavily hit by the sars virus I think so they wouldn't want a repeat of that.

We're discussing here the difference between a hands on government response to a light touch government response, so yes, it defo is ideological.

And Ilm right in saying that in a crisis like this you hand over the running of the situation to a technocratic government to get the job done. This is no time for a neo-liberal worshipping idiocracy to be in charge.
We've all done it. But sometimes you don't half talk some shight.
"you hand over the running of the situation to a technocratic government" ffs
Yep, more one size bureaucracy Will ! fit all is what we need

See China, Iran.

This needs a flexible response

Lol, would you have said that in 1939 when that's basically what the coalition government of national unity was? If you're in a crisis you bring in specialists who advise politicians what the steps are that need to be taken. It's a temporary thing.

Alternatively, we could just carry on with the likes of Johnson, Gove, Patel and Hancock refusing to instruct businesses to pay people time off work to self isolate.

Were getting mired in the political nit picking here.
I've already stated that there is no one size fits all correct response and that I wouldnt trust Any Govt to get it right

That's just not backed up by facts is it?

The death rate in the UK is currently 0%
Although I agree with @RAFUH that when we look back the fatality rate will be less than the 1-2% being currently estimated there is pretty large evidence from multiple other countries that this isn’t “just the flu” - the US had no deaths either a week ago.

Looked at dispassionately from a state level the fatality rate isn’t the major issue with the virus, it is the potential for it to overwhelm healthcare services as whilst around 80% of patients seem to be fine with just rest/fluids/home care the other 20% need some form of medical intervention with the most serious a couple of weeks in ICU on ventilators.

Been reading this thread everyday as there’s some genuinely good advice and thoughts on this.

I ask them, as someone with asthma that has been really bad over the last two years, but under reasonable control, how worried should I be?

When I get a cold it will usually turn itself into a chest infection and I’m a write off for a few days. This will just be like that times ten won’t it?
These are the current WHO guidelines that I believe would apply in your case mate

A perfect excuse for more time spent on GOT and less out shopping ;)

Being extra vigilant on washing your hands, avoiding touching your face and not shaking hands are also pretty simple steps and even if the virus never gets to your local area it will probably help stop you getting more minor bugs
