Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I think the French response is approaching blind panic. Belgium, The Netherlands Germany, Spain haven't implemented anything nearly as draconian as that. With that said, France does seem to have more cases than most of its neighbours.
The French are being proactive. What evidence do you have that their opolicy is causing panic in France?

The Czechs have just said the same, for what it's worth. Gatherings are fine. As an aside, I'm due in France later this month for work, and they've said the (international) gathering is fine. That's after they consulted the health ministry for advice. Granted, there may only be 4,999 of us.

That's your evaluation. On the groiund in Frabnce it's seen as sensible planning.

We should try it this side of the channel.

Not according to my French colleagues and suppliers who are somewhat non-plussed.

Like I say, no surrounding country has taken anything like the same level of precaution and I'm not sure what it is supposed to achieve. Why is 3000 safe and 5000 not? Why can I go watch KV Kortrijk this weekend but 30km away I can't see Lille?

The world's major property conference MIPIM, due in Cannes next week, has been cancelled. It was many times over the 5,000 threshold. Bizarrely they have simply postponed it to early June (might just be a way to try and withhold refunds though)

People who discuss politics with me know I'm as statist. I think that the state should be involved more not less in people's lives. I believe it's the only way of tethering the excesses of the so called "free' market, which, untethered, can destroy people and their communities through naked self interest.

Here's my question: under these extraordinary circumstances, wouldn't you rather we had a strong state laying down some potentially unpopular decisions as a precaution to save lives than what we have right now: a government trying to stand back from making serious decisions?

One thing that should already be in place, for example, is a ban on large gatherings / assemblies. Yes, and that means football matches too. We need to see a 3 day week announced to cut down on contact at all larger units of production - with full pay. We need to see an end to people hoarding food and hygienic products and medicines (we all know that's going on).

To my mind, we have a government failing to take command. 'Wash your hands to the tune of 'God Save the Queen'" is no replacement for a sensible policy on public assembly, employment practices and commercial activity.

So, more intervention and control - thoughts?
Personally, No,
But because of the tremedous number of 'kwits per 1000 of population, (see toilet paper shortage) reluctantly yes.

But its 'The Govt.' They only know one way...and they always almost pick the wrong one.
Heavy hand where they should go light and vice versa...usually both on different sections of the same problem

There'll no doubt plenty of 'its more than my jobsworth' rule stickers in the face of facts.
But the majority of the men and women in the front line will do well beyond their best, in the lions led by donkeys tradition.

When its all over no heads of any importance will roll in the subsequent inquiry

All lessons learned (like most disaster enquiries) will be noted - until somebody actually costs them and says - how 'kin much!

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think the most sensible approach at the moment is to tackle the virus at our borders. This virus has come in from another country. People aren't going to catch it purely by watching Chinese people on the news. As long as we can control the people coming in to the country then we can prevent an outbreak within the UK.

The general public need to be advised to be cautious but if 50,000 people without corona virus attend a football match then none of them are going to contract the disease.

It's people flying in from Asia that need to be checked, people returning from the red zones of Northern Italy or Iran. If there is to be any disruption to people's lives then it should be at the shipping ports and airports.

As an example of how ridiculous the current precautions have been, a school trip returned from Northern Italy to a school in Preston last week. The pupils were actually allowed in to the school before any action was taken. The school was then closed down for 5 days while a deep clean took place. If those people were tested on their entry back in to the country and never let anywhere near the school then the rest of the pupils wouldn't have been affected and the school could have remained open. As it happens all the people involved have since been tested and not one single person has tested positive. It was all a big over reaction based on no evidence of anyone having the virus which unfortunately is what's happening at a national and international level.

Identify the people with the virus and deal with them directly.

Isn't the biggest problem with the virus is it's incubation length? It stays for about 14 days before anything shows up? If so, it doesn't matter if it's in Northern Italy or Iran or England, it's already left containment. Christ, it's like none of you have ever played Plague Inc lol

Can you spot the flaw in your logic?

If you mean the virus is already here, it's ONLY 53 people out of a population of 66million. It's hardly an outbreak at this point. It is very, very, very easily containable with the current numbers. The key to stop an outbreak is to stop more people entering the country with the virus.
