Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Well, this is one lovely mess the Govt is contriving to lead us into. Again.
Okay but in what way now?

It's either do this, or shut down? And the data from South Africa and now elsewhere - Denmark specifically - suggests Omicron is very mild. The Dr who discovered Omicron has been on LBC (vid I posted above) today saying that they know for sure now this is mild.

So shutting down the entire country is a ridiculous overstep. But, doing nothing would also be stupid?

The evidence is that 75% of people who have their booster will not have any symptoms or will be very mild if they get Omicron, which is extremely infectious so is very likely to infect a lot of people. Of that 25% that do get symptoms, most will not come close to needing hospital. All evidence so far shows for that the vast majority of people, unvaccinated or vaccinated, Omicron causes flu-like symptoms (no cough or chest issues with this variant) and is done in 2-3 days. It's basically a bad cold, and that's not to downplay the thing. It literally has the sequencing of a common-cold causing coronavirus in its genetic make up.

The issue is as we know that with a pop of 70m, in the middle of winter, even a small percentage is a lot of people that might end up in hospital. But while I am no fan of this government what is the option right now? It's do what they're doing, or shut everything down, again, which is likely to be complete overkill.

You do realise we will end up shut down? It's almost inevitable now. Confusing messages (stay away from work, but go partying) refusing to bring in lighter measures earlier (I.e. mask wearing) and then fundamentally undermining their own public health messaging by what I'd strongly suggest is infighting (I.e. leaking details of parties last year, not to mention having them in the first place). THAT'S the mess my friend.

Oh, I could add, from friends well in the know, that the original booster program was nor going very well, almost half arsed politically speaking.

Now it's a mad mad mad panic and chaos.

There also seems to be a distinct lack of scenario planning. Incredible.

but it shouldn't be - yes I agree that that is a mess if it happens but there is actually no need for it to happen just yet, and to avoid it they are aiming to get everyone boosted up. Look, I hate this lot, but the last thing Johnson will want is another lockdown. They know they won't last, and they know people won't abide it.

So they're saying get boosted, they've done a public address, Labour have backed it tonight, to get people boosted because that should hopefully - and based on the evidence so far almost definitely should do - stop people getting ill altogether.

Omicron has been in the country at least 3 weeks, probably longer. We aren't seeing bodies piling up on the streets. By next week it'll have replaced Delta as the dominant strain which is a good thing since this is milder.

But yes, I agree that the government is a mess. But they seem to be taking steps to avoid lockdown. If they were desperate to lockdown, they'd have done it. They aren't, because frankly the country can't afford it.

I mean they were chugging along at a fair pace. Uptake in some locations has been poor, for sure, but they'd hit the over 40s mark by 2 weeks ago. Now they have panicked because they are going with the boosters to keep rates down so they're lowering the time needed between doses.

They've done the same in other countries too.

I watched the news earlier about the queues outside vaccine centres, it was the local news so around Yorkshire. A couple got interviewed, in their 40s. They were both booked in for doses on Saturday coming, yet they decided to go down to the centre today and were then moaning about the queues. If you were booked in, why would you not just wait four days?

New Year lockdown all the way.

Nope, we're not getting through. This could have been headed off.

Lockdown

Told you, faster response better planning, better co-ordinated booster jab programme.

Will have to agree to disagree, but this is a disaster of the government's own making.
Okay but they did start stressing the importance of booster jabs as soon as Omicron came, and they'd already been urging people to go and get it?

People weren't buying it. Now they are - because of fear. The cynic in me believes the govs are using Omicron, which all the evidence so far shows is very mild, to get these boosters out quickly and people who were on the fence are now getting them.

But over 50s had mostly all already been offered their boosters before this variant was discovered. My mum and dad had theirs a month ago now. Yes it depends on area and supply etc.
