Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The problem is how feasible is it to keep people indoors permanently for weeks/months on end?

How can businesses realistically stay afloat if there are no customers for the next number of months?

Anyone know what our/europes plans are after these weeks of lockdown?

Seems to me like we dont really have a plan in place and just hope there are no more cases and life goes back to normal - concerning all round.

When I hear that our peak moment is due between late may and late June I start to slip into a morbid sense of forbearing. It’s horrendous now imagine it in 2-3 months. Then I ask have we started this shut down too soon? That thousands are going to die anyway. We can’t all do this for months off our own backs. It’ll have to be enforced at some point. It’s all just proper mental.

I confess I have not read the article because you need subscription. But before I posted I did as always, do my DD. All of the left wing papers were keenly reporting the article and all of the right wing papers were ardently denying it. So form your own conclusion. As regards uncorroborated, once more I have not read the article, but look forward to you providing the evidence they used to back up their story. As always, I'll willingly hold my hands up if I got it wrong.

Tell me how I'm being hypocritical. I'm saying that we shouldn't be posting ANY politically motivated stuff in here. As I said, there's another thread for you to post as much tory hate as you want. Plus, before I responded to your post, I'd already heavily criticised Pete's post that you were referring to. So I wasn't being selective or hypocritical.

All I'm saying mate is that there is too much hate in here. People come in here looking for information and comfort. Save the politics, whichever side you are on, for other threads. It's not as if you're spoilt for choice on here.

Aye thats my concern - its essential to limit contact at present but assuming this thing is here for months how the hell can that be enforced without civil unrest?

I also worry alot about the economy - thankfully my jobs safe but any further lockdown could put me at risk with certain clients I work with - just seems like there is no clear strategy in place worldwide and everyones just winging it a bit hoping it'll just pass its course.

Given that Italy has the second highest average age (behind only Japan) that would suggest that the general health is good.

But it also means there are more elderly people which this is impacting. And in this instance perhaps there are also more elderly people who live with their families.

I was referring to large business. The thing that drives our economy. In this country it tends to be service based. That means that for the most part it’s on-line.

Most large company’s have well defined business continuity plans and for the most part These are working.

Sure I agree the hit is on small independant business but it’s now upto the big boys to prop up our economy and that’s what’s happening.

If the big boys survive then after this is all over they should be the ones who create the environment for the small businesses to start again.

ythe economy will take a big hit but we are coping probably better than most countries right now.

keep the faith. We can beat this
Oh I agree we're definitely one of the lucky ones. Some countries just won't recover economically from this. Not in the foreseeable future anyway. They are also the ones who will suffer most from the virus too. Not only do they not have the infrastructure, but the countries they normally rely on for aid will all be fighting their own crisis.

Me and the missus are trying to stay positive. To be fair, I don't think I'd rather be anywhere else in the world right now than here. Even if the bast**rds have cleaned out all the local supermarkets.

See Italy tightening up on movement in most affected areas.Should we not do same i.e London instead of one size fits all approach

@NorthernBlue suppose we can only go off Italy. If they keep rising in terms of death toll then until the point they stop rising only then will we get the actual idea of how long off our peak is.

I just don't see how, given the rate of spread, it could be that long off. If we're already replicating Italy then it seems like it's going to be much closer than that.

That’s bullplop, he is still trying to make out everything is ok.

The Russians have tried to nip it in the bud. They've restricted flights, closed their border with China and focused testing on those from the most affected areas. They were doing this way back in early February. They have systems in place. Quarantining is something they've done regularly in the past and which is taken seriously. But yeah you can't rule out a cover up.

Things will change much faster (towards better or worse)

It took China 25 days from 1000 reported cases to 74,000 reported cases and after that they "flattened the curve", Italy is on day 22 or 23 and pretty much the same increase like China in confirmed cases, Italy's actions (social distancing) should start showing results in the coming days, one way or another.

One thing to take notice, Italy is currently dealing with domestic spread, basically those who got the virus and didn't know, stayed home with their family and spread it to them, those numbers should stop/end together.

Italy will be an indication where the rest of the world is heading

I think a few of us have shared that concern given the circumstances of this initial social distancing without the testing accompaniment .

We have a position where many are abiding by it , in fact where many are almost isolating already but others seem to be ignoring it despite the restrictions. There will be a breaking point to this , I simply can’t see it lasting for months . I understand that others will say that this isn’t prison and isn’t an issue and I can empathise with that view but I just can’t see much of society continuing this at this if not an increased level for several months without a disturbing backlash .
