Here’s an even scarier statement, from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s strategies during crisis standards of care:

“Universal DNR Order: Adult patients hospitalized during a public health emergency, when crisis standards of care have been declared, should receive aggressive interventions; however, they should receive NO attempts at resuscitation (compressions, shocks or intubation if not yet intubated) in the event of cardiac arrest. The likelihood of survival after a cardiac arrest is extremely low for adult patients. As well, resuscitation poses significant risk to healthcare workers due to aerosolization of body fluids and uses large quantities of scarce resources such as staff time, personal protective equipment, and lifesaving medications, with minimal opportunity for benefit.”

In other words, whether we’ve signed a “do not resuscitate” directive or not, everyone single one of us is now under a DNR directive in Idaho because we’ve reached crisis standards of care due to a deadly and overwhelming surge of unvaccinated COVID-19 patients in our hospitals.

Please get vaccinated everyone, this is really not a decision you want your local hospital to have to take

Empathy for ill unvaccinated is becoming hard to find

I definitely feel sorry for the kids that we refuse to vaccinate due to age. I worry about mine. My older one's good, because I took care of that. His mother is a doctor, literally volunteered in a vaccine clinic, and somehow was "too busy" to get him vaccinated.

I have a lot of emotions about that one. Fury, contempt, disgust...I could go for a while.

Thankfully their “crisis standards of care” document was misinterpreted, it includes the option but hasn’t been triggered.

“To be clear, there is no ‘universal DNR’ at St. Luke’s,” the health system said on Twitter. “The state of Idaho includes a reference to ‘universal DNR’ in their Crisis Standards of Care Activation plan. The state’s plan contemplates and provides guidance on a range of issues that provider organizations may or may not have a need to implement. St. Luke’s does not include this element in our Crisis Standards of Care plan and our internal CSC steering committee has recommended against having such a policy. We understand area providers are taking a similar approach.”
