Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Getting vaccinated and being sensible isn't a solution, and neither is 'learning to live with it'. That's just a catchphrase.

5% of all hospital beds in the UK currently hold COVID patients. It's only going to get worse from here.

What is the solution?

The only thing that we know works is locking down the entire country. But that's just not feasible.

It is false lol

There are more options than 'eliminate covid' and crack on as we are now.

I am not advocating restrictions forever, I'm more focused on the next 6 months which are going to be a disaster for healthcare in this country.

I think we'll see a return to some restrictions in terms of certain things being closed come winter, or rule of 6 enforced for places etc

but there'd also be huge uproar if loads of businesses are closed again and more people lose jobs etc

There's a balance to be struck

I agree with this as well obviously it would be great if everyone lived a bit healthier and exercised 30 minutes a day but thats hard to promote.

In the year 2000 we had 240,000 hospital beds, in 2018 it was down to 164,000. That reduction of nearly a third is a huge problem which is barely ever mentioned. If we had 30% more beds now that would help massively.
It;s very hard to promote but we could definitely do more. I did find it a bit ironic that during a health pandemic, the gyms and sport were shut down for a very long time. Exercise and sport help physical and mental health. I know I felt a lot better since I could get back to the gym and then being able to play cricket again this summer.

Encouraging healthier living is very much a long term solution and won't help relieve the situation right now, but it's never going to be too late to try and emphasise how important it is.

We don't.

We haven't been in 'lockdown' since March, but deaths and hospitalisations have only started to really grow since mid July. There are clearly restrictions we can impose which are effective without a complete lockdown.

All indoor hospitality being closed is a lockdown. We definitely still were in a lockdown in March.

Okay, so we go back into the form of restrictions that we saw from April to June?

That's all well and good, but that also cripples huge sections of business.

Hospitality, the industry probably hit the most by this, can't rely on outdoor trade in the winter months as it could (well, kind of) in the spring and summer.

Events that are just getting up and going again will have to be cancelled, as all of those are indoors. The music and entertainment and arts have really been hit hard by this. Theatres and venues were already going bust before COVID, so God knows what it'll be like now.

So it may not be a complete lockdown, but it still cripples a lot of businesses and risks jobs etc. Then you take into account the whole people not even being able to see each other thing. Not being allowed to go into other people's homes.

Did you enjoy your day at the cricket last week? I enjoyed mine. I can't wait to hopefully get to a gig I've had booked for two years now, when it comes around in late October. People need to be able to live their lives or what's the bloody point. Just keep everything in a state of limbo and let's all wait to die.

Edit: Btw, I think the above is what will happen, I actually agree with you. I don't think it should, but it's definitely foreseeable.

You can argue that but I don't think people generally would consider indoor hospitality being closed as equaling a lockdown.

Otherwise what were we under in 2020, Mega Lockdown+ ?

All restrictions are arguably a type of lockdown but all indoor venues essentially being closed is pretty much a lockdown.

In my mind we were in a lockdown from late December to May. We were not even meant to see anyone from outside your house in March I think?

You were allowed to exercise with one other person not from your household up until March 29th. Then groups were allowed.

I've forgot to mention in my other post, but school closures too. Would they have to be enforced again? God knows what's going to happen.

Schools won't close. I would guess that any measures are more likely to be similar to the summer months last year. Rule of 6, masks, nightclubs, large events and festivals on hold.

Australia seem to be losing the plot

And regarding that app, what happens if someone gets a text while asleep and they miss their 15 min window? Are they going to be asked to prove what they were doing? Bizarre stuff

What if they’re in the shower or something, or cooking? Are the police gonna just show up at their front door unannounced? Are you expected to just have your phone on you 24/7 and keep checking it? Horrifying if that goes ahead, who knows where they’ll stop.

Our problem is of course that we instead promote everything that causes these illnesses. Getting people healthier should at least get the same promotion.
