Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Its difficult because the numbers will explode again now that schools are returning. We will have to see the impact on deaths and hospitalisations.

A sad state of affairs that we are about to see repeated with our children returning to school with no COVID transmission mitigations in place. In this case our government is literally the only one on earth that thinks this is a good idea, is against the advice of pretty much all reputable scientists and the WHO, and it’s probably going to bite them, and sadly us, but they are doing their best the shouts will go, sad acts!

Even Germany has around 25%. The pandemic is a fantastic excuse to seriously get those numbers down. Prevention is half the battle. Obesity can be reduced to mere overweight for the vast majority, but it needs motivation & structural support.

Tho' this graph i linked earlier only had obesity as a pre-existing illness for Covid deaths 4% of the time...and I read elsewhere that most of these were 40+ BMI (seriously obese):

Aye...focus on those at relative high-risk. Promote the vaccine, protect them.

I would support those not at relative risk to have the freedom to choose how they manage the pandemic (outside of personal indoor contact with at-risk folk).
The CDC has a breakdown re age and health status of ICU, the age at least seems to be updated weekly.

I don't see how your latter plan of "those not at relative risk" is feasibly workable, especially as between age and pre-existing conditions a majority would fall into the relative risk bucket for hospitalization (as we are unfortunately seeing across many US hospitals in the states that do not have high vaccination rates).

Plus your moral criticism of some of the current policies was that it created an "out group" that was stigmatized and as I understand it so does yours but instead of the vaccinated/unvaccinated being the difference between having freedom to choose or not your dividing line would be those with medical conditions or not or those that are over 50 or not.

Not only would this mean disclosure of a bigger quantity of data (age plus the 4 factors we discussed above) but it is also far more personal data than mere vaccinations status - “exactly what is your BMI Mr Smith, please stand on this scale and roll up your sleeve so we can determine your blood pressure and see if you make the cut”. These variables would change far more dynamically than vaccination status so would be a nightmare to keep up to date. It would also fail legally, at least here in the US - exclusion/preference policies based on vaccination status have a long history but not on other health conditions like hypertension.

Also your statement that "vaccine's effectiveness seriously wanes after merely a few months" is not that clear cut in current data, especially re hospitalization risk. This whole thread is worth a read

but this is the “choice quote”

Mrs Birks, who is pregnant, wrote on Facebook: "The pain I feel writing this is unbearable, my heart has been ripped out, my soul and world completely and utterly shattered." She went on to describe her husband as her best friend and soulmate

Speaking to the BBC earlier in August, Mr Birks said: "If you haven't been ill, you don't think you're going to get ill, so you listen to the [anti-vaccine] stuff. "When you feel like you can't get enough breath, it's the scariest feeling in the world." He said information had been skewed by social media and conspiracy theorists and he had not had the vaccine.

People under 50 are being admitted to hospitals with COVID-19 in larger numbers than at any point during the pandemic as the latest surge of the coronavirus continues to tighten its grip on Texas.
According to data released by the Texas Department of State Health Services, as of Aug. 22, adults 30 to 49 now account for roughly 29% of all COVID-19 hospital admissions in Texas, up from 15% on Jan. 11 during the height of the winter surge.

The data shows that people in the 18-29 age group increased their share of admissions during that period from 5% to 7%, while the percentage of children under 18 admitted to hospitals with COVID-19 increased by 1 percentage point — an average of 46 children each day were admitted to hospitals during the week ending Aug 22.

Meanwhile, fewer people over 70 are landing in hospitals with COVID-19. During the winter peak, about 41% of hospitalized COVID patients were older than 70. As of Aug. 22, that dropped by almost half to 23%.

The data confirmed what many doctors have been saying in recent weeks about the delta variant sending younger people into hospitals at a higher rate than earlier in the pandemic. “We are seeing certainly younger patients hospitalized and younger patients on ventilators where we haven’t seen that before,” said Dr. Ron Cook, chief health officer at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

This variant has spread faster among unvaccinated Texans of all ages. As of last week, between 93% and 98% of hospitalizations have been unvaccinated people, depending on the area of Texas, officials said.

Yeah - I saw this.
Hopefully the medical board is looking at the physician and the hospital will remove privileges from the physician

I read 4 of the most recent case-control (one was double-blind) studies about the efficacy of invermectin...none were conclusive and many misreported statistical conclusions saying crap like "a trend toward significance" (despite not showing statistical significance) which is incorrect. I'd love a new medicine to come into play to combat COVID, but so far the published trials with invermectin--at least the ones I looked at--don't look robustly promising (effect sizes are very small or non-existent, sample sizes are small, some suffer from p-hacking, etc.)

This entire thread is wild.

Large sections of this country are loosing their minds and I saw a comment amongst all this that we are slow walking our way into our own Capitol Building incident in the UK.

The rhetoric (They're coming for our kids!), the calls to resort to violence, the Trump flags (FFS), perpetual grifters like Icke using it as a vehicle to sell their nonsense and the large far right presence.
