Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

That’s what I haven’t been able to understand about their strategy over the past several months. They handled things brilliantly early in the pandemic while the rest of the world fell on its face. However, because of the world falling on its face early on, the possibility of a zero-COVID world went out the window many, many months ago. Unless they choose to literally never reopen their borders to the wider world, they are going to eventually deal with at least some amount of the virus circulating. For some reason the government seems unwilling, or unable, to revise their strategy to coincide with that reality.
The plan is to open up more once vaccination rates are higher but we're currently only sitting at 19% fully vaccinated. The vaccine rollout has been a debacle and the main fault lies with the PM - he initially banked on the AstraZeneca vaccine being the one that the majority of Australians would get but with the changing health advice regarding it in addition to the confusing messaging there has been a lot of hesitancy. We've had far too little supply of Pfizer and are only due to be getting a significant amount more in Sept/Oct

That’s that got to do with it? I’m just pointing out it’s as likely to be that as it is to be covid.
you mean not responding part? oh ok, maybe. what about masking in the open air? its her life ofc, I'm not saying it should be banned lol.

It's sad that people are this terrified.

I was being a bit daft with my reply

People are generally horrible though and I don't want to be near them - but I wouldn't jump out into the road if I saw somebody coming

I do think we need to get out of this - "Oooo, they're wearing a mask and Covid is over so they must be a bit weird" mindset - I saw a chap riding him bike the other day with a mask on and my initial thought was 'That's a bit odd'. Then I thought, 'If I was riding my bike near a load of traffic, wouldn't it be quite nice not to have all of those fumes flying into me"

Probably the same for those 2 ladies in the convertible TBH

I don't think that most people have that mindset tbf. I still wear my mask and have seen loads doing it in public indoor places. But someone wearing a mask on a bike is actually probably quite dangerous if they suddenly start feeling short of breath (but yes on the flip side perhaps it'll help against polution etc).

Wearing a mask while doing exercise isn't really advisable. You need full access to oxygen

I'd be surprised if we're out of lockdown by xmas, they talk about knowing zero covid is unachievable but keep locking down region after region. I don't really understand what their strategy is and i don't particularly have much hope in them coming up with anything as every politician in this country is an imbecile.

I see NZ have today announced their intention to have an 'elimination strategy' and they'll remain shut until the new year, but will allow fully vaccinated people from 'low risk' countries in from 2022.

I honestly think that's more risky than it is cautious tbh, unless they do manage to convince the whole pop to be vaccinated by then which is great. People who are fully vaxed could carry it coming in from other places. You can't eliminate COVID, you just can't. But I do suppose if there is a nation that on the whole can come close then it would be NZ.

I’m not sure about terrified. I wear a mask sometimes. I’m not terrified at all. It’s just no bother to me and it seems quite sensible at the moment.

I don’t think you have to assume that people are terrified just because they’ve continued. It’s habitual for some people.

If smugness was a vaccine then NZ could eliminate it in record time.

I love the place and think their PM is great mate but I really don't get the elimination strategy, unless the rest of the world was following suit.

Anyway, feel for you, what are you allowed to do right now, head out for exercise? Been months on and off now pretty much hasn't it?

It's actually weird, its lockdown but life just goes on as normal. I go to work every day as normal except have to wear a mask and sign in on the QR code, most shops still seem to be open where i live. Just seems to be schools and local sport shutdown.

Personally the worryingly thing for me is we've moved out of our house and into my mothers whilst we've got major renovations going on at our house and only got a few weeks left till its complete so frantically hoping trades aren't stopped. Been here for 10 weeks and got about 4 weeks left till it's finished and can't wait to get the hell out of here lol

Not exactly fun being back at my mothers when I'm nearly 40 ffs lol

Tree pollen can affect some people quite badly too.

I’d assume a lot of allergy sufferers have concluded that wearing a mask regularly makes their lives a lot more pleasant and reduced the need to take allergy meds.
