Shopping in Liverpool this morning.. I reckon about half the people in the shops were wearing masks. I wore one as did my family. Lots of shop staff not wearing them..

It almost felt wrong or bad not to put my mask on to be honest! Even though we don't have to..

Given staff members in places like hospitality and retail have had to wear masks for hours on end every day for the last year, I honestly have no issue with them not wearing one.

I don't have an issue with anyone else not wearing one either really, but if you're just going to the shop, I don't see what's so hard about it - hence i'd put one on.

Apart from the gym on Monday though, I obviously haven't been anywhere all week so don't know what it's like round me.

Interesting discovery on major means by which SARS-CoV2 represses innate immunity- could be basis for new anti-viral therapy.

And even if cases are thankfully going down it will take a while to work theough the system due to the lag between cases/hospitalization/ICU
He said the majority of those being treated "have had no vaccine" and the public could "really help us [by] getting vaccinated as soon as possible."
"It's really important that people carry on using their masks, carry on with the personal responsibility of social distancing if you can and most of all get double jabbed," he added. "That's how you can help our staff and make their lives easier."

The thing that confuses me is if everyone is being urged to still use masks, SD etc. why did the gov make them all optional from this week.

It is generally doctors who are still urging mask use and social distancing, those who have to deal with the consequences.

Why is the health secretary implicitly calling those shielding cowards and yet not uttering a peep about those proclaiming NHS staff should be tried and hanged for delivering vaccines - your guess is as a good as mine.

Was the Trafalgar Square thing today? It’s not on The Guardian or BBC’s news pages.

This is probably the right decision, as it ultimately increases the likelihood that supporters are able to continue attending matches and gives clubs some critical financial stability, particularly in the lower leagues. As an overseas fan who was holding onto a faint hope of getting to Goodison at some point during the upcoming season, this is obviously personally disappointing.

Spent a couple of hours re-reading through some of the posts from the 'early days' of this pandemic

An absolutely fascinating time-capsule of opinions (some terrible, including my own) fears and dissenting voices

Reading back as the whole thing unfolded is kind of eerie, and really makes you understand how naive we all were about the life changing events about to happen to all of us.
