So if the vax we have becomes wholly useless v. this or any future variant, we go back to the beginning again? Baking bread etc. (I know that's a big if and hope not)

Is the vax suppressing the virus is our only viable option? Variants, mutations and setbacks....so tiresome.

Say, we never found any vaccine for coronavirus disease in the first place, what were we doing at this point, 17 months on since March 2020, would every country be still in lockdown?

Vaccines can be tweaked and developed to encompass this and future variants. At some point in the future this will be like the flu is now. We’ll have developed herd immunity for a range of variants and maybe you’ll have a winter where there’s a bad one like with the flu but we’ll be able to get to some normality. How long that takes is anyone’s guess.

In the meantime, what we do kinda depends on how much you want to overwhelm the nhs or not.

I’m a bit worried about freedom day off the back of the footy tbh. It feels a bit too soon.

Though my life has largely gone back to normal if I’m honest. Mask wearing aside, the only real difference is having to book a table for the pub. Everything else is more or less the same. Apart from summer holidays that is.

I genuinely can’t think of anything else. So I’m probably not the best judge in that regard.

regarding your last question, the globe would be effed. The economy at least. Either through lockdown or the sheer volume of sick/dead people.

I can understand why people just focus on the deaths (which should be lower because of the vaccines) but to me the issue this wave will be the impact on further delaying surgeries. A 35 year old unvaccinated person with Covid admitted to hsopital will likely survive (although may have long term health problems) but the cancer patient whose surgery they further delay may not be as lucky

All layered on top of exhausted medical staff :(

Don’t admit the 35-yr-old to hospital unless they really, really, truly need it?

I don’t know for sure, but, I can’t imagine that people who are in their 20s who are now ending up in hospital as a precaution due to covid would have been admitted in the first waves
obviously it’s better to be safe than sorry - but that shouldn’t cost the life of someone else either

stop pushing these surgeries back and start dealing with covid for what it now is, not disease x

Bolded- we don't have much time imo. People's mental state has been deteriorating, it cannot go on like. It's always like, 'it will end at some point' from posters (my friends too) yeah but 17 months already. Can we afford to live like this for another 3 years?

Live like what exactly? At this moment in time, before freedom day, what exactly is having a detrimental effect on mental state?

I think we need to be more pragmatic about self isolation, particularly for kids. But beyond that, at this point, is your life *that* impeded?

Don't you check news every other day, mate? The ever changing rules, question marks on vacation, staff scanning your documents when entering a cafe / concert hall for vax or PCR, it is not the life we used to know at all. Would you say we are back to 2019? I wanna be back to 2019. It will never happen though as it stands.

like this? no

can we deal with this virus far better than we have, with fewer deaths, less interruption to society and much less economic damage? yes

No I wouldn’t say we were back in 2019. But I also wouldn’t say we were at 2020 either.
Do you really think not going abroad on holiday, scanning your phone going into a concert or having to do a PCR test every now and then are that detrimental to mental health? As opposed to just saying eff it and letting people get ill?

Getting rid of rules entirely won’t take us back to 2019, either. As people will keep getting sick.

ive not been abroad but had time off here (went the lakes) and it was amazing. I’ve been to pubs with mates and weddings. Had to scan or do a test but wasn’t a big deal. Had a 3 hour train journey yesterday and currently on the bus wearing a mask. A slight inconvenience but detrimental to my mental health? No.

Agree generally but here - wish we didn't have to choose either

Well, if you're taking a PCR test you actually have to have the following:

- Cough, fever, loss of sense of smell/taste
- Have tested positive on a lateral flow

You also have to isolate for the 24-hour period around your PCR.

If you get a positive result, you have to isolate for 10 days from when you first showed symptoms and get constant calls from track and trace asking you to disclose details of where you've been/who you've been with.

Anyone who lives with you has to isolate for 10 days regardless of symptoms.

All that for a headache?

It's just totally implausible mate.
Mate, you're an intelligent person, so I think you'd realise that most people would not react purely from a headache but rather a combination of symptoms.

The 24-hour isolation isn't ideal, however if you've got the concern of having COVID due to a combination of symptoms then perhaps it's not bad to isolate.

If you're positive, even if was only just a headache that isgnalled it, again isolating for ten days is currently the right thing to do.
