Oh yeh. The lid thing is always advised too though

Never heard of that, but makes sense.

Thing is, with Mrs R in the ICU still, I have noticed that every single time a nurse does anything with her, be it helping her into a chair, or a more complicated thing, they always put on a new pair of plastic gloves, and a new plastic apron. Then lob them in the bin afterwards.

Meanwhile, I am there, holding her hand, or brushing her hair, (even helping with lifting her sometimes) with no protection, after coming across no end of bugs and stuff on my way there.

Its maybe to stop a spread of infection from patient to patient I guess, cos they rotate between them all over time.

There are also cultural differences. I've spent a lot of time working in Asia and the thing about Thais proudly picking their noses in public is true to a noticeable degree. The Chinese (when they are not sniffing and actually use one) leave used tissues all over tables and desks as if they don't know what to do with them. While the salaryman or ajoshi of Korea is never more at home in his male skin than when shattering the dawn by throatily preparing and flinging out a huge gob of grok all over the street.

"Pippa Hart, director of nursing at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals Trust, is urging staff and patients to “keep a lid on it” as part of a campaign to prevent the spread of infections including norovirus and Clostridium difficile.

She is advising people keep the seat down when they flush the toilet in order to avoid germs spreading out of the bowl and into the surrounding room.

“Leaving the lavatory lid up can allow a cloud of bacteria to explode into the air, settling on nearby surfaces, including towels, flannels and, more worryingly, toothbrushes,” said Ms Hart.

She added that keeping the lid up was not a “massive health hazard”, but the simple act of closing it before flushing could create a “cleaner, healthier environment”.

My wife works in the hospital (she is in gynae though not ward) and as a result cleans her hands so much they are in bits. They really drum it into them (for obvious reasons).

Good to hear Mrs R is on the mend, sounds traumatic for all of you.

Never gave putting the seat down a single thought. That said, I am a bloke, y'know.

I got C Diff when in ICU myself.
Was proper grim.
Isolated after that too in the critical care unit.
And I've now realised my toothbrush charger is right over the bog.
Sake.

My mate is a millionaire who uses Chinese manufacturers for his furniture biz. The stuff he's told me about the markets, how they keep animals and general living conditions plus the shte they eat is unmerciful

He used to fly in and be out in 2 days living off mars bars and crackers he'd stocked up on, only when McDonalds opened did he manage 3 days.

Being ocd about hygiene I just couldn't cope with the place even though I like asian women

The whole thing looks spookily like the movie ‘Contagion’. If you haven’t seen it, dig it out. The very last scene is scary and entirely believable, given current events.
