Didn't the guy on Marr this morning say they simply don't know yet? Cases are rising but whether that will lead to more hospitalisations and ultimately deaths seems unknown right now. I said earlier this week that the ratio of cases to deaths is 10x higher than it's been at any point in the pandemic to date. If that continues to be the case and the vaccines appear to work in massively reducing deaths, that's good, no?

Very good. But unfortunately still 20% are unvaccinated, near half haven‘t had the full two. If infection goes through all communities then it will get to those people in particular - the number is too high at the minute. I do think we should be very close to reaching a near here immunity though. Just don’t see the point in not waiting another fortnight when we know we will pretty much have all over 18s done by then.

I think what what we are seeing now is probably close to being the new normal of a few years. New strains appear and there is a low level wave of new infections, despite the best efforts of the vaccination programme.

I suspect Boris will delay the 21 Jun reopening, but sooner or later he will have no choice be to accept the new norm and put in place his permanent plan, as global data will basically show that this is something that comes and goes and we will just have to adapt and learn to live it.

Unfortunate for sure. However at this point, 65 and ups in most or all of those states have had access to the vaccine for over three months. The only reason they aren’t protected by now is because they’ve chosen not to be.

We'll never have zero covid and nobody is immortal. The world is just going to have to accept that and get on with life, including international travel.

I think it's better than called it the 'indian' variant etc. I think it's quite out of order to effectively blame a country.

And in practical terms B1.617.2 is a pain to type out and unless you are really into looking at them hard to remember which variant is which.
