That’s been known for ages, it’s just that the BBC website are tardy at updating at times. Admissions are only up by 18, but many are short term stays nowadays.
That's it. data needs context. Admissions slightly up, but the bulk are shorter stays which is good. It's the last bit that media leave out as admissions up is a more sellable headline unfortunately...

Whilst I appreciate everyone needs a holiday, myself included, I worry that thousands of people flying off to holiday in countries that are nowhere as advanced with their vaccination programs as us is a recipe for disaster for the UK.

I hope we don’t end up back in lockdown come September/October!

I thought the same. However, I don't think we will end up in lockdown.. those countries however...

We've gone from 40000 to about 1000.

It means that there is room to take people in with very mild symptoms just in case. If in doubt they will be admitted so hospitalisations will continue. As you said, the context is important.

We’ve got the vaccines to stop it. Last time we did not.

Cadbury are giving away “Free Staycations”.

It’s like they are trying to wind us up, with that being those like myself who see leaving the country as a holiday.

Pictures of ice cream cones with flakes stuffed in them, alongside candy floss on the BBC News website was bad enough. I don’t want that, I want to see culture and life in a different place.

Variants are the worry can see already from Kent to Indian the vaccines are less effective.

And we had lockdowns so not to overwhelm our very poorly funded and inadequate staffed NHS from other illnesses and accidents not just COVID, can easily see a lockdown or overwhelmed NHS because of a bad flu season along with COVID and increase of accidents come darker cold days of winter. Factor in a mass of elected surgery delays now turning to emergency surgery.

Downing Street leaned on Public Health England not to publish crucial data on the spread of the new Covid variant in schools, documents seen by the Observer have suggested. Scientists, union officials and teachers said that the lack of transparency was “deeply worrying”.

The focus of their anger concerns the pre-print of a PHE report that included a page of data on the spread of the India Covid-19 variant in schools. But when the report was published on Thursday 13 May, the page had been removed. It was the only one that had been removed from the pre-print. Days later, the government went ahead with its decision to remove the mandate on face coverings in English schools.

Some people on Twitter are getting very agitated about this:

It's truly bizarre, there are some people who are (rightly) consumed by hatred for the Tories that they're even willing to discredit Public Health England. The Guardian / Observer, for example has gone so far off the deep end recently that they're willing to dedicate column inches to people who are no more an expert on this than you or me, yet because they have 'Dr' in their title, they're afforded extra respect, even if that doctorate was achieved in something that, though worthwhile, isn't relevant to epidemiology or medical science in general.

Don't even get me started on this independent sage crap, a name which implies that the real sage are not independent.

In the anglophone world it is unfortunate that the word "doctor" is a medical practitioner and also a higher academic qualification in any discipline.
That lead to the confusion which doesn't exist in other languages.
