It's possible it could have delayed things for a few more weeks, but, if it were so easy, how come no major nation has done this? How come we're seeing this variant flare-up outside of India in western countries almost simultaneously? Is it possible that we all missed it? Or could it be that we can't escape from the fact that closing borders isn't actually possible and/or effective?

I don’t think it is easy tbh but I do think, especially islands, it is achievable when combined with other techniques - Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan for example have all had success in the past year.

Despite having land borders Vietnam also managed it despite a population greater than the UK and being significantly poorer.

Vietnam defied the experts and sealed its border to keep Covid-19 out. It worked.

I don’t think it a panacea, Taiwan is currently having a community spike that I presume is due to B.1.617, but I do think it an underused tool in the COVID toolbox.

From today there will be no figures published for hospital deaths at weekends and Bank Holidays

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 7 deaths were announced today, down 10 on yesterday and up 2 on last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average rises slightly to 10.29

For the 60 day cut off, 15 deaths were announced today, down 23 on yesterday and down 4 on last Saturday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 23.57
