I'm not ffs

They should have locked down much earlier. In hindsight - a year on - we can say that the UK, and every bloody European nation, should have locked down in February. But that's using hindsight.

With the data we had available at the time, and scenes in Italy and Spain, the latest we should have locked down was around the 9th/10th March - so basically, 2 weeks before we actually did.
That two week delay was responsible for the bulk of UK deaths in the first wave; and Johnson's failure to put in place a late autumn lockdown was respnsible for the bulk of deaths in the second wave.

What is the reluctance of some of you people? Name names. Johnson's inaction - his kow-towing to corporate fascism - has taken the lives of the majority of our people in this crisis.

Just acknowledge it. He's a butcher and will go down in history as one.

To read your posts you'd be hard pressed to explain why this country HAS THE WORST PER CAPITA FATLAITY RATE OF ANY SIGNIFICANTLY SIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

Why are you avoiding acknowledging that the government of the day in this country bears all the responsibility for that? Why?

Dont answer it until the Fat Laity sings.....

Bloody hell alright Vladimir.

Don't think @Barnfred 55 was talking about 'Russian people'. He was referencing their government and how they probably don't give a flying f*** about their own people, as long as they look good around the world.
Russian people are great, the western propaganda tries to make them look bad. Just compare the wars started by USA vs wars started by Soviet Union/Russia.

The Russian vaccine has fantastic results.
Couldn't have put it better Toff. The Russian government murder, cheat, steal and embezzle, and then laugh at the world when they're accused. I don't think the USA are that great either to be fair to him, but not in the same league as Russia.

I actually feel sorry for the Russian people who aren't part of their government or security forces. I'm sure most have had to deal with hardships we in this country can not even imagine.

The simple and sane reason is because there are a host of other reasons. That isnt defending anyone btw, its just different to wanting to pin every single death on one person, which is an unhealthy obsession.
He's taking all the decisions. Who else shall we point at? That's just reality.

And the host of other reasons dont add up to anything like the primary reasons: failure to lockdown; failure to suppress the virus with track and trace...all down to him.

Oh dear. We all know, or at least believe due to hindsight, that we should have locked down a bit earlier. The use of the words, murderer or butcher, are not really accepted by anyone who doesn’t have a political agenda on this issue....

Once a government takes more power they won’t give it back.

The last group of people who need to have more power is these lot of Tories, so why are people on the left agreeing with this?

I have seen some terrible takes on Twitter, the hypocrisy going on makes me angry.

Where in that post that you've quoted have I said that the government weren't responsible for not shutting us down earlier?

I see that Novavax, the vaccine which will be made in the U.K. on Teeside, have not yet signed a contract with the EU. The company are delaying signing a contract with the EU citing production issues etc. Now it’s pretty clear that they have no intention of signing anything with the EU having seen the reputational attack on AZ. Why would you ?....

Because people on the left have got themselves into such a strange twist of moral obligation and self-righteousness that it'll be very difficult for them to ever come out of it.

It's like the YUPPIES who were screaming lockdown this time last year and that the lockdown wasn't enough and that everybody must never leave their house, yet in June were out on the streets for BLM.

Issue is, on the other side, you get the right-wing idiots who don't care about anything as long as they're not directly impacted or just are so put off by the idea of the 'left' - and what part of that has become, the self-righteous part, the overly politically correct part (the ones saying that that stupid message going around about James is promoting transphobia, for example), that they'll automatically just vote for this Tory government.

It's all a big mess.

The whistle-blower from the Icarus documentary (on the Russian doping scandal) had to be smuggled out of the country and is somewhere in the US in witness protection. His family were held without charge for weeks. He hasn't seen them in going on 3 or 4 years now, I believe. He's supposedly on the top of Russia's hit list.

Totally normal.

I mean it was March. IIRC last Feb you were spouting that it was all a media conspiracy.

They locked down probably 10-14 days too late last year. Maybe even a week would have done it to really help. I remember because around my birthday everything was (relatively) normal - so the 9th of March - other than people being told to wash hands, use sanitizer etc etc (but i remember that kind of stuff with swine flu).

Within 4 days, the PL had shut down and suddenly everything was like, Christ.

By the 16th - I remember going for a coffee and the place was eerily quiet. Obviously a few days later that and everything else was shut.

It was probably that week - 9th to 16th - that was the crucial one. And yeah, a massive failing. Also Valance presenting that chart which forecasted peak deaths to hit in 3 months and they quickly realised how wrong they were. All happened around that week (believe that Valance graph was the Thursday 19th/Friday 20th).
Spot on Toff

Tuesday 10th March, the stats team from Imperial college London, were telling SAGE that, on the infection chart, we were 4-6 weeks behind Italy.
Friday 13th March, SAGE became aware that ICL were working on data that was 2 weeks old, but believing they were up to date.
Monday 16th March, all hell breaks loose when we find out where we really are on the infection chart. Johnson goes on TV to address the country, telling those in the high risk groups (over 70 and medically vulnerable) to self isolate, and all other people to stay at home if possible,
Friday 20th March. All pubs and restaurants formally closed.
Monday 23rd March, Johnson announces formal shutdown.

In hindsight, Johnson could have ordered a formal shutdown on Monday 16th. But SAGE wanted to do further analysis, particularly on schools, before doing this plus they also needed to work on things like the financial package for business's and their workforce. And in fairness, you can count back from the peak in infections in early April that the turning point was 16th March when Johnson told people to stay at home, rather than 23 March when the formal shutdown started. This was borne out by the number of news reports we were seeing of empty pubs and landlords asking for more direction. I witnessed it myself when I went for lunch at a very popular venue on the Wednesday and me and the missus were the only diners in there. All the big sports events had already closed down by then too.
